It had 0.5MB RAM, but I upgraded it to 1MB RAM, unbelievable There was also a hard drive upgrade available, but people didnt like it much because the fan made a buzzing sound. You're right, but Doom was the one that made the difference That game was awesome and showed the Amigas weakness, a total lack of maths processing power. Alien Breed 3D was the copy attempt which even on the A1200 ran badly. Still got mine too btw (A1200) and with a 200meg HD I paid over 300£ for back in the day! Also Pinball Illusions. I also remember when they released Pit Fighter with the 'semi' realistic characters in it. Do you remember that attempt to release a beat em up to beat Street Fighter 2 - I cant remember the name of that one tho? Rise of the Robots was one on 30 disks! I remember the name Rise of the Robots - can't remember the game though. Monkey Island was a top game but that too was on about 10 disks! I'd love to find that somewhere. We had three Amigas. Anyone remember the very first model with the keyboard that could be stored under the box and that needed to run the Kick-Start s/ware before you ran the OS s/ware. Crazy days, especially watching Ian MacNaught-Davies on Micro Live dismissing the Amiga as a frivolous flash in the pan compared the the BBC model B or whatever. MONKEYmark Posted August 29, 2005 Share Posted August 29, 2005 i bought an atari st had it 2 weeks then took it back as it was shite and a postage stamp for screen size and could not scroll to save its life. i was a big amiga fan. i started on a a500 then a500+ then a1200 then i finished of spending £2000 for a a4000/040. one of first games i got was defender of the crown, real colourful graphics 4096. think at that time only the 286 pc was out. that was a joke getting games to run on it and configuring sound cards. had crap sound and graphics. the amiga was way ahead of its time back then you could multitask with 1/2 meg of memory.had fantastic scrolling. was funny comparing atari st games against the amiga games. remember outrun small screen on st big screen on amiga. the best one was pacmania small screen on st on amiga it was like off edge of screen and silky smooth. superfrog was a great game.and my all time fave was mindscapes CAPTIVE. also love emerald mines. that was first game i heard in stereo.the demo scene was always pushing the boundries of what they could do with the amiga. i went to buy a 500meg hard drive for amiga and bloke in shop tried to charge me more for amiga.even though it was an ide hard drive.they must think you fools lol. think consoles led a part to amigas downfall too. and with the amiga not been open architecture like the pc`s. but saying that the amiga was used for babylon 5 for 3d graphics. heres a newsgroup alt.binaries.emulators.amiga i knew a mate who had a a1000 and another had a b2000 brings back memories lol Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Sent it off to Commodore to get the old kickstart rom replaced for free and they rebuilt the whole thing. The only original things left were the floppy drive and case. Result! Dash Rendar Posted August 29, 2005 Share Posted August 29, 2005 I had an A500 too! Great machine. Bought a 52MB GVP hard disk for it (which was actually quite quiet!) and ugpraded to 3MB of RAM. Then bought the A1200 with a 120MB hard disk and 2MB of RAM. Sadly I sold them both to fund the upgrade of my 386 to a 486. (I was still at school so didn't have much spare cash... Working Saturdays in a cafe washing up didn't pay all that well!) But now I have another A500 (still looking for a hard disk) and another A1200, all courtesy of Ebay. In fact, I bought an A1200 with 030 accelerator, CDROM and a box load of CDs for £30 in a car boot sale about two years ago. I sold it a week later on Ebay for nearly £200!! My fav games on the Amiga: Xenon 2, Megalomania, F/A-18 Interceptor, Silent Service II. BTW, WinUAE is the defacto standard emulator for Amigas on the PC. It's pretty good and runs most stuff...
