Pig
Can i please have some opinions on these. I am considering getting this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GTECH-G-Tech-PRO-TUNING-METER-NEW-FOR-ALL-CARS_W0QQitemZ7995954814QQcategoryZ72205QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem However is it worth the extra outlay to get the more expensive one?? Thanks
GeordieSteve
I used to sell em... they're pretty good. Work well
imi
I prefer the competition series....not only are they are performance meter, they also include a SHIFT LIGHT indicator and you can hook it up to your PC too...
D3xt3r
I have the big new version the RR its pretty good but the PC software is shit I cant get it to synch with my pc :/

D3xt3r
It worked only once after that never but I didnt change anything... Tested all settings and everything but doesnt want to work...
Mike
How does this work then? "All you have to do is plug it in a cigarette lighter, mount it to the windshield and start accelerating." "At the heart of the Gtech Pro is a precision silicon accelerometer. An accelerometer is a sensor that measures acceleration, also known as G-Force. " So you just give it power and it monitors your engine perfomrance? am I missing something here? precision silicon accelerometer? eh? Surely it doesn't work on motion? D3xt3r
It works on motion. To give power readings (which is just a gimmick) you have to enter the exact weight.
Mike
hmmmm... so their cack then? Thanks for the tip....
imi
hmmmm... so their cack then? Thanks for the tip.... How did you figure that one out?
Mike
Well if it works on motion, surely the suspension of the car, and/or the way it's driven would come into play? the softer the suspension the less motion it would get? either that or it's inherently 'not very accurate'..? How can it be accurate if it doesn't talk to your engine? It is a gimmick isn't it?
Mike
Where's Digsy when you need him...?! I need more explainstion on this..!
Homer
No mate, you misunderstand, most accelerometers record g-force in all planes so can measure acceleration (duh!) VERY accurately. The direct acceleration measurements (0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile, etc) are highly accurate, its the 'bhp' figure that some give that should be taken with a bucket of salt. It needs car mass, rolling resistance, etc to even give an approx result...
imi
Lots on info on the web as to how these work....no point regurgitating all the details here. Basically if you are tuning your car, then a device like this would tell you whether your car is performing better or worse than before. Mike
I'll check it out.. just seemed to profess to be a bit more clever than it probably is... but the 'better or worse' bit makes sense, with all things being equal etc... interesting stuff, never seen one before.. Cheers..
JohnA
Don't know how accurate the GForce is, but my accellerometer is very accurate. you can do 0-60, 40-100, 1/4mile, standing km etc and get very accurate and repeatable figures. you can also get max hp at the wheel during each run, as well as max G-force etc. For hp figures you need to do some extra measurements on a flat surface to calculate the rolling resistance and aerodynamic resistance. You also need total weight of course. Very useful if you want to see whether your 'mods' have actually made the car any faster.
Gamer
It beats the hell out of having to go to a dyno all the time to check on your progress.
JohnA
Indeed. You need to have access to an 'available' stretch of straight, flat road though. You also get just max power figures, not a torque curve like with a dyno. Airflow through the radiators and engine bay is 100% realistic, and engine load is 100% compared to a dyno. On the negative side, it is only viable on dry days, and you have to do ambient temp adjustments yourself. But it's practically free once you start using the gizmo, and it waaaay more accurate than the 'seat of pants' dyno. Which is pants.
Homer
John, which product are you using? How did you manage to find the rolling resistance for the Supra, is it something you calculated yourself? I'd like to use the bhp figure on my ap-22 but have never been able to find which figures to enter.
JohnA
Go here and enter the weight and two coast-down measurements: 60-50mph 20-10mph. Use the AP22 for these, set the 'time between speeds' and off you go. Just make sure the road is flat and there is no wind.

JohnA
I would appreciate it if you could PM me the measurements (average ones, you'll obviously need a few to make sure they are close enough) I could then compare them to mine, which I don't trust too much, I've got to redo them lol... michael
I've got one of these older units in my garage at home, brand new in the box - never even opened (I love impulse buys ). Does anyone want to make me an offer for it?
Digsy
Where's Digsy when you need him...?! I need more explainstion on this..! I spent the entire weekend with my lay-dee. I didn't touch a spreadsheet the whole time
