ccssupra
Hi Guys, Going on a 4500 mile trip with the mr2 in a month, and its started making this loud noise (only occurs at idle) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0NnUKCiTAM What could this be? Never heard anything like this before.
Swampy442
Could be a belt tensioner bearing?
L18msy
Alternator? I have heard a few times now of these going due to water dripping onto them from the vents on the engine cover.
wile e coyote
As limsey said they prone to it
Mk4Gaz
Doesn't sound like alternator belt, sounds more like a bearing
Scooter
Remove the fan aux belt and briefly run the engine. If the noise has gone investigate each pulley on the belt run?

TBDevelopments
lol at tubbytwo. seems a shame you can get a used one for around £30 or a recon for about £70.00 and its not hard to fit. Banger rally for a simple alternator swap seems a bit extreme Tim
Scott
Indeed.... http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2-knowledge-base/mr2-mk2.html?catid=9&kbartid=
TBDevelopments
theres an easier way of doing that job as well. i've never in 15 years removed the main alternator bracket from the engine block when fitting an alternator. Tim

Banger rally for a simple alternator swap seems a bit extreme Tim Its going on a banger rally anyway. Its a bit of a shed. The noise doesn't even come from the alternator, it comes from the throttle body Indeed.... http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2-knowledge-base/mr2-mk2.html?catid=9&kbartid=166 Already seen it thanks though
TBDevelopments
throttle body? there isn't really anything there that can make that king of noise, you have the butter fly and the idle control valve thats about it. Although directly under the is the bellhousing and the gearbox. are you sure its coming from that area and does it make any difference in noise if you press the clutch? TubbyTwo
Alt bearings or alt belt. Had same on all my mr2s.
ccssupra
Well it does seem to be the idle control valve. Only ever makes the sound at idle, and is more of an "instant" sound, it doesnt matter what revs the engine is at, the alternator would surley make a different sound depeding on speed. The alternator seems to spin with the belt off smooth as silk, certianly doesnt indicate anything is wrong with it, and im not having any power issues. TubbyTwo
Problem is just spinning it by hand you wont get the same load or speeds as when belt driven off the crank.
TubbyTwo
I would listen to Tim mate he knows his MR2s.
