SupraLEDrears
Getting really sick of this car now. Gave it a few revs earlier and suddenly everything just started vibrating like mad with a blowing noise coming from engine. It gets worse when I take the oil cap off. Oil seems fine, crank pulleys fine, no hoses visibly damaged and checked all vac lines. It vibrates in neutral and when I drive but seems to be better in 4th and 5th but still makes the noise. I can't see any smoke coming out of the exhaust but it feels like damp air coming out of the tailpipe. It's worth mentioning that my 4month old crank pulley disintegrated 2 weeks ago and I replaced it with an aluminium one. I've checked it and it seems fine. As always, any help greatly appreciated. Dnk
Is the crank pulley tight ? That's the first thing i would check seeing as you have changed it recently Personally i wouldn't use an aluminium CP, do a search on here for the reasons why or read this auto.howstuffworks.com/harmonic-balancer.htm Edited May 24, 2014 by Dnk (see edit history)
listy
I'd be looking at the crank pulley as Dnk says. There is a resaon the stock pulley i dampened.
SupraLEDrears
Tight as can be. Noise similar to this. but hopefully not the same symptoms
Kirk
How long have you been running it with an Ali crank pulley?
SupraLEDrears
10 days
Mk4Gaz
The noise in the video - although not yours, sounds like bottom end. If a crank pulley dies while the engine is running, can it throw the crank out of balance and cause big end damage?
SupraLEDrears
Went to mechanic he reckons it's misfiring.
Kirk
Why didn't he just test that theory whilst you were there then to confirm it?
SupraLEDrears
Why didn't he just test that theory whilst you were there then to confirm it? It's Saturday and he's got quite a few jobs going before end of play so I'm just gonna take the leads off to see if it actually is.
SupraLEDrears
So checked the leads and engine goes lumpy when removing each one.Seems the engine has to be disassembled now.
SupraLEDrears
So I've checked the engine mounts and seems solid, It feels like the vibration is coming from where the gearbox meets the engine. Engine runs fine with no engine fault codes either and power still there. How many other mounts are there?
Sukhy
Clutch, flywheel play? Mine vibrates a bit and can feel the car shake at idle too. Soon to be replaced though.

Yeah I'm wondering if the ali pulley caused all vibrations to go to the flywheel and something went wrong.
Kirk
If you've got a standard pulley put it back on and see if it quietens down but the damage may already be done.
Kaan W
Bottom ends gone. Solid crank pulley is no good.

Kaan W
What do you mean with bottom end? Crank, bearings etc, more than likely to be at the rear of the engine. Would need stripping down to see exactly but something in that area is off balance.

The power still feels the same

The power still feels the same Not entirely sure, obviously if it pulls the same as before the damage is only minor at this stage. I wouldn't drive it until you know exactly what's wrong with it. I could be wrong but it does add up, the harmonic damper pulley is designed to balance the crank or something along those lines. Chris Wilson will be the best person to talk to. Fingers crossed
jay200bhp
on your bottom end there is no minor fault that would be better... at this point it may be worth saying its maybe not the car to be cheesed of with more the things your doing to it? get an oem crank pulley on there and have someone who knows supras i.e lee perryman or paul .dude etc and see where you are... Chris Wilson
Do a compression test on it, then a leakdown test. Madness to strip it, external tests will isolate most issues. Pay for good diagnosis, will save you money long term.

Chris Wilson
And it won't be anything to do with the crank damper, you would know if it had a broken crank. Not that I like or recommend solid pulleys, long term they may cause crank failure.
