kokoro
I've got bunraku on DVD and its a great film! Another fan of Bunraku here. I thought it was beautifully shot.
Kendo11
Watched Need for Speed this weekend and have to say it gets an easy 10/10. Many nods to the games, some brilliant driving and great camera shots to boot. Would recommend this to anyone! Just finished watching it weirdly enough. Very entertaining car film. The very best car films are the ones that when the driving starts, there is no soundtrack, little dialogue - literally just the sound of the engines. The race at the start with the muscle cars and the race with the Keoniggsegg monsters are two superb examples of this.
Scott
I really enjoyed need for speed. As ridiculous as it should have been, the fact it was done properly (absolutely no CGI) really ticked the right boxes for me. Very well shot too, although a little over eager with the panning/zooming at times. Expendables 3 - If you REALLY liked the last 2, you'll probably enjoy it. For me they're just flogging a dead horse now. The plot is razor thin, the scripting is awful (other than Arnie) and the cast is terrible. I know the last part sounds ridiculous, but other than (some of) the familiar faces, none of them could act.
jamesmark
Watched 'Trouble with the Curve' yesterday. Stars and produced by Clint Eastwood. Absolutely brilliant film, based around him being a baseball scout and issues with family (best way to explain without spoiler) Thoroughly recommend a watch even if you, like me know feck all about baseball. Could not agree with you more Scott, the acting was so bad that it was actually uncomfortable watching it, I was clock watching throughout. Although, Arnie was not the star for me, he was good but I think Antonio Banderas's character was quite entertaining, rescued the film for me (possibly cause it distracted me from the rest of the movie)

Arnie just stood out for me because his lines were hilariously cheesy, I loved that he's not afraid of extracting the urine from himself. GET TO THE CHOPPAAAGGH. st3ven1
GET TO THE CHOPPAAAGGH. Genuine LOL moment in the film. But totally agree, worst of the three by a mile. Not helped by being a 12A, really hate the number of movies being ruined but reducing them down to a 12A. Cut-away at the crucial moments, reduced blood and gore, never see anyone being killed directly and only allowed one F-bomb per movie. Honestly I'm glad it leaked, for selling out and making it a 12A.
kitch79
I said a very similar thing the other day when I seen a trailer for it! I know they aren't as strict these days, but the movie makers are certainly copping out and making movies at lower Certs. Just had a look through the cinema listings, robocop 1 is showing at some :-) that's an 18! New one is a 12.
nolizma
Hey nice thread! Im a massive film geek but I like weird movies, I am sure they are not to everyone's taste. My favorite genre is sci fi but I like any kind of movie if it is well made. Best ones I saw lately were: "Enemy" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2316411/?ref_=nv_sr_1 "Under the skin" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441395/?ref_=nv_sr_1 "The zero theorem" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2333804/?ref_=nv_sr_1 These are not the typical american blockbuster type, they are more art films so be alarmed. I'll admit... I've never heard of them I'll have a read/trailer watch now tho. ---- First 2 look good, 3rd I'd watch but I'd need to find a longer trailer prob as slightly odd ha. Thought it was a bright nutty comedy when It first came on

On that note a couple of notables for me and obviously there are many more, but films that had a great ending and should have been left at that were SAW - That was a proper WTF never seen that coming in a bazillion years ending. Rest of the SAW's were good until the started flogging a dead horse. But if they left it at the first one, would be epic. Jeepers Creepers - Yeah not a film to set your world on fire to be honest. But the way it ended I thought was great.

I've heard of that a while back and thought it sounded interesting, but didn't know it was released. Now that I see its a Terry Gilliam film starring Christoph Waltz I shall definately watch it Its a proper heavy flick. Creates very weird emotions. Reminded me a bit of "brazil", but it is very original too.
Scott
I don't like pretentious films (Drive and Only God Forgives with RG stand out massively at the moment) but I do enjoy the odd flick not made for mainstream so I'll definitely have a look at those mentioned. Zero Theorem looks interesting. The Human Centipede films are interesting. I actually REALLY enjoyed the second one, visually I thought it was fantastic, they were right to cut the end scene though... that was far too gratuitous. Does a non-mainstream film have to be pretentious? I don't like overly pretentious, obscure films either but then again I don't watch 99% of current releases, and even most of the "must see" blockbusters I wait for the DVD and watch it at home in peace and quiet for a fraction of the cost I'll happily watch a black and white war film with hammy acting and terrible special effects if the story is gripping, or a classic spaghetti western with overdubbed dialogue and then equally happily put something more accessible like The Expendables on. I watch a lot of old cold war era science fiction films but most of those are truly terrible. Most of my movie collection is older films, though. I recently watched most of the Kurosawa series on Film 4. A lot of people would probably say that was pretentious just because they are foriegn language films but if you can get past the language issue then the stories are just as good as anything produced in the west. Films are like wine, I guess. People can claim to be experts on it, but in the end it just comes down to what you like. - - - Updated - - - Server DP. Kendo11
All of those are great films, I also love all Scifi especially the classics. Andromeda Strain was very good. Anything with an apocalyptic feel is my favorite sort of film, both old and new.
Scott
Does a non-mainstream film have to be pretentious? Not at all, I was more retorting to the "arty" comment by one of the previous members. I love non-mainstream films, the trouble is that most of the ones that get any hype are horribly conceited, as are the people who review them and describe all the moods of the cinematography etc. I love a well shot film as much as the next person, but when the acting, plot and general story are crap I'm not going to give it a thumbs up because the director did a decent job. Totally agree with all of that, as per above.... it was a bit of a miscommunication on what I was putting across. I love all the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns, I can't go the John Wayne ones though. Never liked the guy or his characters I think I saw that one on PornHub A masterful piece of cinematic brilliance.
Scott
Transformers Age of Extinction - I didn't think much of this at all to be honest. I've always loved the Transformers (80s kid) but since the first revamped movie they have gone down hill. This one, for me at least, is in full on free-fall. Not even the mind blowing visual effects could do anything to save this. The acting is terrible, seriously bad. The "bad guys" are so cliche it's laughable and the plot is razor thin. The "Good Guy" is a lowly inventor with, apparent, vast experience of weapons and combat with an instant understanding of alien technology. SPOILER ALERT ****** The first scene with the "new" transformers shows bumblebee shooting one, it splits into a million pieces then re-joins... making it appear to be un-killable. This trait is never mentioned or shown again throughout the movie, when in combat. Instead the new transformers can be damaged and pulled apart like any of the normal ones. The trouble is, if they had used consistency, the new transformers would have annihilated the old ones without so much as a scratch. Lazy, lazy, lazy writing. Someone came up with an idea and noone could be bothered to make it coherent.

Yes it was enjoyable for me but I wish I got it on download as it was not that enjoyable, agree with your review sums it up to a T. Although said inventors daughter was hot. I was truly amazed how white her white denim jacket stayed throughout the movie. The product placements were awful.

It was a solid action film but the story let it down Recently seen hercules and it much of the same tbh. Ok action film but weak story. The highlight of the week was earth to echo, basically a kids film, is much like a modern ET. Kids trying to help a reboot rebuild his pod so he can go home or something along those lines. Amused me anyway lol. Will be seeing guardians of the galaxy and probably the new purge film at some point so ill share my thoughts
Al Massey
I really loved Guardians of the Galaxy. Great film, story is awesome, with plenty of references to classic 80's. Linked in well to other marvel films even if subtle. Action was great, graphics looked amazing. Would highly recommend this film to everyone
