Noz
Are you able to feel the shaft, to see if it has any radial play (angular movement left to right when sat in the bearing). Would be an indication.
T14PPA
He said its new. Going to pick it up tomorrow so ill feel the shaft there. Just wanted to know if that turbo is good
David P
You'll need to state the model/size(s) to stand a chance of a sensible answer, the label pic is ineligible.
T14PPA
The guy dont know many details of the turbo. Anywhere on the turbo that says the info you need?
marc_p
Old school, personally would stick to anti-surge turbos myself.
Guest Budz86
Couple of things....It doesn't look new for a start. But if he says it is, why does he not have the details on it?

Chris Wilson
It looks like an old diesel engine turbo off a (big) truck engine, and as such is totally unsuitable for a performance petrol engine. Apart from looking far too big it won't be designed for the exhaust gas temperatures a tuned petrol engine will have. Considereing the price of a good manifold, pipework, mappable ecu, mapping, engine rebuild, blah blah, you should be choosing the *correct* turbo for your needs, not a *cheap* turbo. IMHO.... T14PPA
Anyway of finding out if its a diesel turbo? I thought alot of the american supras use truck turbos with good results? I just thought for £130 for a genuine garrett turbo would be better then what im already running It looks like an old diesel engine turbo off a (big) truck engine, and as such is totally unsuitable for a performance petrol engine. David P
The information on the label, or old wives prattle. Take your pick?
Chris Wilson
A Garrett agent, or Garrett themselves should be able to say what its original application was. The fact the Americans use them would be enough to send me running, to be honest Diesel engine turbos are NOT the same as petrol engine turbos. EGT's are vastly lower in diesels as they utilize the calorific content of the fuel far more efficiently.

Chris Bailey
£130 for a supposedly newish Garrett turbo sounds off putting.
David P
Toyota used the same single turbo on 2LT 2.4 diesel as 3.0 T.T. 2JZA80-GTE.

Ian C
Thats why i wanted people on heres advice It's reading to me like you wanted people on here to say "yes it's perfect, gosh what a bargain" and they are doing the oppposite. Apart from "it's the wrong size, for the wrong fuel, it's not new, it's old tech, you'll spend thousands trying to make it work even badly and it'll probably explode and trash your engine, if not it'll just be a dog to drive", what more do you need here to unconvince you? T14PPA
Thanks for the advice boys. Chris was right. It is a truck turbo. Thats that out the window
Noz
If you want a cheap turbo at least buy something that's tried and tested with the NA-t crew. Otherwise buy a second hand precision unit. Fly is breaking his NA-t setup. If you want a cheap turbo maybe consider his T61. Otherwise keep an eye out for a second hand unit on here
