Very High Pressure in Coolant System, Help Needed

the radiator would stay cold while the engine would be red hot

Actually that's not strictly true . . . even with no Water Pump at all, you still get coolant circulating, due to convection. The hot fluid is drawn towards the cooler fluid in the radiator. ( I had that on one engine, where there were no blades left on the water pump at all!)

But Scott is right (and as I said back in Post 11) - regardless of what is causing your high pressure, if the Radiator Cap was working properly it would be opening and relieving the pressure !

Just a quick update, without a definite answer at this point

After stripping half the Engine Bay out and then installing my Stock Radiator and replacing the destroyed WaterPump to Turbo Hose with some spare fuel hose I had

I then only had time to refill and bleed the system, I got the system upto temp with the cap off and then allowed it to cool and draw fluid from the expansion tank

Unfortunately due to it getting late I only managed a short 2nd test to get it upto temp, but not revving the engine much as I didn't want to annoy the neighbours

The pressure built to what I would expect and coolant flowed into the expansion system, so I now know that that part is working with the stock system

Plan was to carry on with a high rev test on the drive today, but it is pouring with rain, so no go today which is annoying

Weather forecast is rain all day today, but better tomorrow, so hoping to get the chance to do a proper test tomorrow and then get it booked for a sniff test Saturday

I am going to do a sniff test whatever happens, just for peace of mind

Hope you get this sorted soon bud as little problems like this are very disheartening

Mate it is so frustrating, from memory I first smelt the coolant before Xmas, but couldn't find the leak, it's been going on so long I can't remember driving the car without checking the coolant level lol

If it's going in and out of the expansion tank then you are good to go bud. Glad you've got a light at the end of the tunnel :)

Hoping this will be the start of the end of it, but now need to give it a proper test and check that I don't have a HG problem, so the plan is to get the car hot tomorrow and rev the hell out of it on the drive, then take it for a good run

Then just to be 100% sure, it will be booked in for a sniff test Saturday, at only £20 it will be well worth it to know one way or the other and give me a bit of reassurance before Dragonball

Mate if it's raining sit in the car and rev it

Not like you can do anything else apart from sit indoors and ponder over it

I know that sounds like it makes sense, but I want to be able keep an eye on the pressure build up and checking for the fluid coming through to the overflow

Also need to watch for any leaks, almost every hose has been off at some point in the last few weeks

If you had owned a Mk3 Supra you would know how important it is to replace ALL your hoses every 7/8 years . . . because one little bit of overheating and the 7M engine kisses goodbye to the Head Gasket . . . get a bit of coolant in the sump and you can kiss goodbye to the big ends too!

The trouble is that many people have left hoses on their engine that are nearly 20 years old !

The 2JZ may be a lot more forgiving, but it's still sensible to carry out preventative maintenance.

Hi Matt, think it was a faulty Rad, I had my old N/A Rad sat here, so put it and it was fine

Lee sent me another Rad down and it has been okay since (touch Wood)

Lee was going to send the bad Rad off for testing, but have not heard back from him on the result
