marc_p
Ok guys, stick with me here as it has been 18 months since I last drove the supra and I should have sorted this a year ago(especially with Dragonball in a month) Anyway to start from the beginning at Suprapod 2012, I did a hard launch and suffered horrendous wheel hop, then after that when I make slow and tight right hand turns (like a regular t-junction), the rear diff area makes a thud....thud.....thud......sound, in a straight line and open bends it's fine and around left hand turns it's fine. Diff wise, it is a standard Torsen LSD, which shouldn't really suffer a fault like this(if it was an LSD I would maybe put it down to a bent plate), but I may be wrong so feel free to correct me. If it's not the diff, it would surely have to be a bush, I have replacement ear bushes(Superpro ones), but I did notice some fatigue/cracking on the rubber rear diff-subframe mounts(could this cause an issue) Car/diff etc isn't high mileage, got around 75k on it. I know this is my fault for forgetting about it but I'd ideally like it done before Dragonball as I'm cutting it tight already, the fabricators are picking it up on Thursday, then it's gone for 5 days, them back for 4 then it will be getting picked up to go to the mappers, so I have limited time here with it. Oh and also, what diff oil should I use? I'll be draining the diff to check for any debris. Thanks all Marc
Dnk
Drive shaft cv joint maybe ? Edited April 16, 2014 by Dnk (see edit history)
marc_p
Unlikely as there seems to be no play in the shafts, plus the symptoms would crop up in more than just tight right handers. I unfortunately can't remember if the car needed drive or not to make the noise.
Guest Roger NE
From the symptoms you describe I would say it HAS to be a problem with the diff . . . But I'm no expert on their internals I'm afraid. (I've just replaced them when they've broken!)
Chris Wilson
I would say you have knackered the LSD myself. But it COULD be something else. I think I would check that neither hand brake shoes nor rear calipers were binding, with crossed fingers, then suspect the diff and get your wallet out
marc_p
Hmmmm, due to time scales, I'll try and get a second hand diff off someone, if it turns out not to be the diff then I can just sell mine.
bignum
Does the car react with the thud, ie lurch forward/backward, i have a large case uk diff here if you`r stuck.
Abz
Hmmmm, due to time scales, I'll try and get a second hand diff off someone, if it turns out not to be the diff then I can just sell mine. I know a few members keep them as spares, maybe worth swapping one over quickly to see that is the problem. It does sound like an issue with the diff as thats the only thing I can imagine would "thud"
marc_p
Does the car react with the thud, ie lurch forward/backward, i have a large case uk diff here if you`r stuck. No lurching, you can feel a slight thump as it does it but it doesn't lurch, the car still behaves as normal, I did about 700 miles on it after it happened and didn't have any issues. The diff that's on it will be left on for mapping as it still works fine, but will hopefully have a new one for Dragonball(worst case scenario, I blow this one and have to get the car recovered).
