Guest Roger NE
Once I had fitted my new 2JZ-GE to my W58, I noticed there was a bit of noise when stationery . . . (I actually suspect it had been there for a while, I just hadn't noticed due to always having music on! But was obviously listening for things with this new engine) The noise goes away as soon as you press the clutch pedal, but comes back at the point where the clutch starts to bite. I fitted a new Friction Plate, Release Bearing and Pilot Bearing while doing the swap (the Main Clutch Pressure Plate looked perfect). And I've obviously checked the oil level in the gearbox. It's a slight rattly noise . . . not really noticeable when driving, just when sitting with the engine running . . . but after a long drive it's noticeably worse. I'm presuming it's likely to just be the Input Shaft bearing in the gearbox that's worn out? (mine has done 230,000 miles) If you guys agree that's what is is, do you have to take the gearbox apart to replace it? (if so, that's way beyond me!) But looking at the diagram in the TSRM it looks like it MIGHT just unbolt from the front. Or given the mileage on mine, should I just fit a s/h box I've been offered? Guest Roger NE
Surely there's somebody who's familiar with gearboxes can advise about this noise?! Am I right in thinking it must be the input shaft bearing? Or could it be something to do with the clutch? The only thing I didn't mention in my original post was the fact that the wire clip that came with the new Thrust Bearing DIDN'T seem to fit on the Clutch Fork properly (and the original clip that DID wouldn't fit the new bearing) So could that cause this sort of noise? (if wasn't attached to the Fork, and was just floating on the shaft?) Edited April 13, 2014 by Roger NE (see edit history)
Crash Bandicoot
I had a strange noise when stationary with my first NA 5 speed. I was 99% positive it was my release bearing. It sounded sort of like a constant binding/grinding noise. I drove it for 6 months and nothing bad came from it :/
Guest Roger NE
Oh I don't think anything BAD will come of this . . . But I want to sort it out ! I like my car to be perfect - don't want a rattly noise! Edited April 13, 2014 by Roger NE (see edit history)
Crash Bandicoot
Me too now i have the one ive always wanted I'd get a new release bearing that fits better
Guest Roger NE
Well it's not the Release Bearing, just the wrong clip supplied with it But could the Release Bearing floating on the shaft cause that noise? Chris Wilson
It'll either be the input shaft bearing or the layshaft bearings. All turn when the clutch is engaged in neutral. Most of those gearboxes are slightly noisy once they get some miles on them. It'll be noisier once it's run a while as the oil will be warmer and thinner. I wouldn't worry about it, a rebuild will be tricky and expensive.
Guest Roger NE
So you agree with me then Chris, that the noise is unlikely to be the fact that the Clutch Thrust Bearing may have come unclipped from the Clutch Fork. I wouldn't consider repairing the gearbox . . but I've been offered a low mileage one for £100, so will probably fit that. (as I say, mine has done 230,000 miles, but I've been offered one from an 80,000 miles scrapper) Many thanks.
