Noz
Just had a call from the garage apparently my competition clutch has a supplied thrust bearing with a center bore too large. He recommends making up a brass brush. Surely there must be an easier option. I can't use the standard bearing as the pressure plate apparently wouldn't allow it. Chris Wilson
Why not just phone the makers in the US and see what the original usage of the bearing they use was, and get the correct one locally?
Noz
Hey Chris. I've got the parts and I can solve the concern easily by just machining a spacer for the bearing to sit on the shaft casting. The only thing I'm worried about now is the r154 is typically a pull box. And the way it's behaving with the clutch fork is a push type. Chris Wilson
I thought all N/A boxes except the 6 speed Getrags in the very late ones were push type clutches.
garethr
They are, but this is the R154, not the W58. The R154 is definitely pull-type. To use the R154 you need a 1JZ flywheel and a 1JZ or Mk3 Supra turbo clutch. Would it be possible to convert to a push-type and keep the R154 actuating arm etc? EDIT: http://www.mk3supra.org/topic/596-guide-fitting-a-clutch-on-the-7mgte-r154/ Edited April 12, 2014 by garethr (see edit history)
Guest Roger NE
Yes I've never really understood why, on the Mk3 Supra, the N/As use a conventional PUSH type Clutch (with the W58 gearbox), whereas the Turbos (with the R154 gearbox) use a PULL type. Would it be possible to convert to a push-type and keep the R154 actuating arm etc? I suppose the problem is the fact that the Clutch lever that fits a JZA70 Bellhousing (ie 1JZ to R154, which you'll be using with your 2JZ) is designed for the PULL type ! Incidentally, the Mk4 N/A Supras use exactly the same Clutch components as the Mk3 N/As (both use W58s, albeit with different gearshift levers) Edited April 12, 2014 by Roger NE (see edit history)

If it's the bellhousing, clutch arm, and slave cylinder for the R154, surely it has to be operating correctly for a pull clutch?
Guest Roger NE
Exactly - in fact I just noticed I put PUSH when I meant PULL in your quote of my post - just corrected the original It sounded to me as if perhaps the Clutch Kit Noz has been sent is actually a PUSH type . . . and that is the problem Edited April 12, 2014 by Roger NE (see edit history)
dr_jekyll
a pull type clutch puts roughly 30% more clamping pressure with the same pedal weight
Noz
Further to investigation, the clutch kit is clearly for a push type. Following this, I've been told by Abtin the box I bought was setup for a Giken clutch, which uses push setup. So following this, it looks as if my box is converted for push and luckily, the clutch kit suits. I need to make a spacer so the bearing fits correctly, following that, we shall see if it functions correctly. Very odd having an R154 with push setup. Thank god I got the right clutch kit! Guest Roger NE
How bizarre ! The company who sent it to you must be psychic then LOL ! Glad you've sussed it all out anyway
Noz
Hopefully sussed out dude. I'll keep updated as soon as it's at least working correctly.
Guest Roger NE
This is the trouble with buying stuff from the USA . . . if the part is wrong ! I bought a really cheap clutch kit from the USA . . . which is fine, EXCEPT the wire clip with the supplied new Thrust Bearing doesn't clip on the Clutch Fork properly (and the wire clip from my original one won't fit on this bearing) Hence my Gearbox Noise post on here - still waiting to get some useful replies/comments!
