death whine

ADD

Recommended Posts

they arent known for doing the death whine, as the exhaust side of the turbo is made from ceramic it tends to just shatter when it fails and disappears out the exhaust (or gets trapped by the cat if you still have one). There have been problems with the manifold gasket leaking slightly and causing a whine.

Certainly if you go BPU then it will show if the turbos have a problem as the extra boost will kill them pretty much straight away.

Whoever is doing your BPU work can probably check the turbos and manifold gasket while they are at it.

how much are we talking for new turbos?

They are not cheap from Toyota there, quite a bit cheaper here from memory but still not exactly cheap, if you need a price let me know.

A set of second hand ones would be cheaper but then there is always a risk of them going too, other alternative is get yours rebuilt with new internals or speak to TerryS/Migster about the BL budget single kit they do.

branners, if i did have problems wiv the turbos and all i was doing was full decat/fcd/spark plugs/restrictor ring, would it finish them off?

:help:

Afraid so mate! Going from 11.5psi to 17.5psi ... your turbo's will have a cardiac arrest. :(

It sounds like you want more performance .. as your going BPU so if it is your turbo's ... Forget hybrids .. go single turbo.

how much we talking clarkey?

I think it would depend on what mod's you've already got.

My car was already BPU .. exhaust, midpipe, downpipe, FCD, Walbro .. I'd already got those.. and £4k got me .. BL Budget Single, 550cc injectors (cleaned & flowtested), S-AFC2, S-ITC, replacement SMIC (mine was fecked), turbo blanket, AEM WB 02 AFR Gauge.

Hybrids .. including fitting are £1800 .. but you still need the supporting mods for it. Uprated injectors, fueling computer (EManage or SAFC/S-ITC), a decent IC.

I worked it out on an excel sheet .. and the costs of Hybrids v Single T61. The single was £600 more.

That £600 is worth every penny!!

There is a thread on here

Simple choice really .... "How fast do you want to go ?" & "Money."

on higher mileage cars a decat and exhaust is enough to reduce the back pressure against the turbos and so can lead to a bit of smoke, people have put the cats back in and the smoke goes away. The reduction in back pressure and the additional boost will show up any faults in the car.

I have a single turbo on my UK spec as my stock turbos failed around 10,000 miles after going BPU, but the car does have 130,000 miles on it.
