Guest CrazyBadger
Hi, So i'm new to the owning a Supra thing and had an issue with the speedo not working. Took the clock's out to test the signal with a multi meter and found out that it was the driver so thought 'yes i can fix it' chuffed with myself i set to putting the clock's back in. put everything back where i found it. Started the car and it went pop So now the weird thing is (and i'm guessing here) the window's and lights have stopped working and the rev counter. The rev counter has been working in the beginning. I think i blow a fuse?! but honestly have no idea what i've done. p.s. I swear i touched nothing and haven't dicked about with any wire's. Thank's
stevie_b
What do you mean by "the driver"? Apologies for stating the obvious, but it sounds like an electrical short somewhere. I would double- and triple-check any wiring or circuitry which you have touched.
Chris Wilson
What do you mean when you say it was the driver? What went pop? Welcome to the forum, but keep away from my cows and the cat please.....
Guest CrazyBadger
lol cow's and cat's thank's for the quick reply. I was told that was what it was called. It's the sensor on the gear box that send's the signal to the clock's. sorry for any spelling by the way. Jump started the car and it start's but the idle is everywhere and i'm guessing that's linked to the rev counter going.
Chris Wilson
If you leave it idling for 20 minutes oo so does it settle down? Was there no signal from the speedo sensor in the gearbox? Not sure a normal multimeter would test that... Is the car an N/A or a TT? If TT jap or UK spec? The RPM signal comes from the igniter box and goes to the engine ECU and the dash. I think the fuses you need to be looking at are to the right of the accelerator pedal, behind a small plastic cover on the side trim, down in the driver's footwell. stevie_b
Was there no signal from the speedo sensor in the gearbox? Not sure a normal multimeter would test that. That's what I thought too: IIRC the signal from the speed sensor (what you're calling the driver) is a square wave pulse, which you'd need an oscilloscope to test. Chris Wilson
It's possible with a multimeter, but ideally a `scope to show proper clean waveforms are being produced. I think the MKIV usea hall effect sensor as in the video...
Guest CrazyBadger
Thank's everyone. ok this may help. It's a 94 Jap import N/A manual. was just going off advice given by a local garage. and taking it up to get the clock's fixed now as i think i'm going to do more damage then good. thank's for the help with locating the fuses as well. i'l get some new one's asap and get them swapped. does anyone have any idea's if (once the fuses are changed) it would be ok to try starting the car again to test it of would that blow the fuse's again. sorry if ive been a but vague in any of this everyone and i really am greatful just very new to this car and finding my feet. Thank's again Chris and Stevie you've been a massive help. Edited April 1, 2014 by CrazyBadger because im a mong (see edit history)
Chris Wilson
I very much doubt if starting it will do any harm at all. If it still runs like a dog after 15 / 20 minutes idling I would perhaps then re-assess whether driving it far is a good idea, especially if it's blowing black smoke (mad rich ---- could wash the bores of oil).
