Si_s Supe
I'm hoping to refit my calipers with new discs and pads tonight / tomorrow but I've just cleaned up the shims and some of the shims that sit against the pads, the dark coloured ones, are pretty shot. Can / should the pads be fitted without them? Can / should they be fitted in the state they're in or should I get new ones? Only reason for asking is the car has been off the road for two weeks and I REALLY want to get it sorted this weekend, but if I have to order more parts today, I won't get them until next week! DodgyRog
I think the general consensus is you don't need them for normal road use They stop the squealing, which is not really heard on the stock pads, that is what I found with a it of searching anyway I think a few including Chris Wilson mentioned you get better Brake Pedal feel without them also
Si_s Supe
Ok, thanks. Looking at it, I can't see why you can't just use the outer stainless ones if any!?
Dnk
I ran my uk brakes without the shims and had no issues
Si_s Supe
Executive decision made, I'll fit without the shims! Cheers guys.
Chris Wilson
They are fine to re use, if you want to be near 100% sure you get no squeal, but personally I never fit them on most cars as the pedal feel can be better without them. Especially the multi layer shim type like Toyota used....
Hassan
Sorry for being thick. But in above photo is it the black or silver you dont use or both not used?
Chris Wilson
You need neither of them, but if you do choose to use them, fit both.
Hassan
Thanks for that buddy. I'll go with your advice and not fit neither.
Si_s Supe
I've put them in without either. Still got one more corner to do so not sure if I'll get squeal or not yet. Have put a very light smear of Copper Grease on all contacting surfaces so hopefully that'll help.
Si_s Supe
Just to update this for future reference for anyone, I have NO brake squeal at all without the shims. The brakes are sharp and the pedal feels good. Can't see the point in them ever being there TBH!!
