Brake pad shims??

I'm hoping to refit my calipers with new discs and pads tonight / tomorrow but I've just cleaned up the shims and some of the shims that sit against the pads, the dark coloured ones, are pretty shot. Can / should the pads be fitted without them? Can / should they be fitted in the state they're in or should I get new ones?

Only reason for asking is the car has been off the road for two weeks and I REALLY want to get it sorted this weekend, but if I have to order more parts today, I won't get them until next week! :(

I think the general consensus is you don't need them for normal road use

They stop the squealing, which is not really heard on the stock pads, that is what I found with a it of searching anyway

I think a few including Chris Wilson mentioned you get better Brake Pedal feel without them also
