Josh42
Hi guys, I've currently got the sump off my engine. I've removed the rear crank deal housing and the old crank seal. I've fitted the new seal into the housing but was wondering if anyone knew the best way to refit it. Currently the engine is on an engine stand. Cheers Josh
Swampy442
Bit of sealant round back of the housing and the base where it joins the sump, bit of clean oil on the sealing surface then slip it on and bolt it up.
Josh42
Tried that mate, but due to the engine stand, it's difficult to get anything onto to it to make sure I'm pushing it on square...the metal spring keeps popping off:(
Stevo
So by the sounds of it Josh you've not removed the seal retainer/housing? It'll be very hard to do it with the back plate of the engine stand still attached - you'll be better off removing it then take of the seal housing, fit the seal into it then refit housing as per Swampy's pits above. Josh42
Hi Steve, I've removed the housing and fitted the seal itself. What I'm finding is that when I try try to then refit the housing back on, the small metal spring that runs around the inner lip of the deal is popping off. The only way to then get it back on to the lip is to remove the housing, retrieve the spring and start again.
Swampy442
When I did it, it was pretty straight forward, I have pics but don't think that will help lol.
Chris Wilson
Put the seal in the housing on the bench. Put sealant on relevant surface of housing, fit housing starting with it TILTED and only part of the circumference of the seal over the crank's shoulder. Use a blunt thin, smooth tool, like a thin plastic knitting needle, or a ground down small screwdriver to lip the seal over the crank, rotating the tool in the seal as you straighten the housing and slowly push in=t into place. use a drop of oil on the seal lip and crank surface. Don't nick the seal's lip!! The front seal, done in situ is much harder. I use a special tool.
