2 Supras, same weird idling problem

Both NA's, one 93 and the other a 95 facelift. When the cars gets up to temperature, it will idle very weird, almost like it's misfiring or spluttering. It does it mostly as you're in slow moving traffic and just etching forward, depressing and pressing the clutch or sometimes just as you are standing at traffic lights or gearing down to stop. On mine, I thought that the rocker cover gasket went and the oil went into the plug holes but my mechanic had a look and it was actually the oil seal near the distributor cap. He checked the cap and tho rotor arm, both 12 months old and he was happy with the way that they look and said that there was nothing on the spark plugs like oil.

I did change the little vac pipe on the exhaust manifold that goes to the vac sensor, but nothing changed. My mate had his idle control valve changed but didn't do anything either. The only thing that I noticed, is that when I unplug the air flow sensor connectors, nothing happens. Should it not idle weird all the time if this happens? At normal driving speeds, everything is perfectly fine, no problems.

Anyone had the same problem?

Sorry for always just posting problems.

If it "sorted itself out" it is likely to play up again . . .

Think of the TPS like a conventional Volume Control in a radio or hi-fi . . . it's basically a variable resistor with a wiper that goes round a track

You know how volume controls go crackly? That's because of dirt buildup inside. Just wiggling the knob back and forth can often clean them OK . . . but to do a proper job you use electronic Switch Cleaner/Lubricant. (this removes the deposits that build up, and also re-lubricates the track to stop it wearing out and reduce oxidation)

The TPS is exactly the same . . . but of course it's in a much more hostile environment than a radio - lots of dirt, heat etc !

Just cleaning it properly will often fix it . . . but it may need adjusting (as per the TSRM) so that it is giving the correct resistance readings at the right point of the throttle opening.

By the way, I also agree with Scott that your poor Idle symptoms are also what happens if you need new HT Leads.

They are the most neglected item on ANY engine - I always recommend fitting a new set every 6-7 years. (the insulation develops microscopic cracks that you can't see, and there is no real way of testing them without very specialised equipment. And faulty leads won't ever show any Error Codes)
