Cipriani
Really in need of some advice, a friend hosed down my engine bay today with this really good degreaser. The dizzy and air filter were bagged off. It ran perfect after until now it is misfiring and generally running rough. All 6 fire when the revs pick up and will sometimes drop to 5 at high revs, I've never had a car with a distributor before so really just guessing to be honest. David P
Could be water in the plug wells.
Al Massey
Could be water in the plug wells. Yep, that will be the issue I once got coolant in mine as a pipe split. Ran like crap, misfiring the lot Wasn't till I stripped it down completely that I found it. Take out all plugs, after a quick clean, try use a Hoover to suck up the water, dry off, re fit and jobs a good un
Cipriani
Right I'll give it a go, don't know if I'm working away this week so might to be next weekend. Would the issue escalate if it was left sitting like this you think?
Cipriani
I'm going to have to strip off that manifold arrangement, god damn it

Chris Wilson
Run it up to temp, and let it cool a couple of times, with the bonnet open, it;ll probably evaporate the water in time. Or use an air line and blow as much as you can out with manifold in place if you are worried about removing it (10 minutes...).

Or use an air line and blow as much as you can out with manifold in place if you are worried about removing it (10 minutes...). That works for me. I'd pop the dizzy cap off and check for moisture in there as well seeing as it only takes a minute to do
Cipriani
Cheers guys. Got a day off work tomorrow to do this, I'm not worried about doing any work on the car after all that is how you learn. Just don't want to go messing around near the throttle body without already a point in the right direction. Also I was going to do the plugs next month anyway. Dnk
Indeed, worth a peek inside. Good point Sir! We got a miss fire on my sisters Alfa which was tiny water droplits in the cap like condensation, quick spray with electrical cleaner and a wipe out job done

What state are the leads in ? might be worth a new set if they're the old originals or some cheap ebay junk
Cipriani
I haven't had a look yet to be honest. Since buying the car in January I've mainly focused on suspension and minor cosmetic stuff. I'll have a look, if nothing else give them a good clean
Cipriani
Ok seems the prediction of spark plug wells was correct! Some images I took this afternoon. You guys agree?

Quick clean up, dry off and it should be right as rain mate And while I have your attention, how should I go about removing the manifold ( GE engine ) The inlet manifold? Cipriani
Yeah, I don't like messing around near the throttle body when I haven't done it before or know what I'm doing.

Chris Wilson
The cam cover seals are also leaking. VERY carefully nip the cam cover bolts and studs down . In doubt? Use a torque wrench. DO NOT over tighten, or you will crack the cam cover castings.
Cipriani
Do you know the torque settings for the bolts?
Chris Wilson
You will think me a right arrogant barstweward, but apart from rod, head and main bearing torques I am of an age and experience where I do things by feel. I can only say read the shop manual, but it will feel a lot less than you probably expect is correct. I don't have my manuals to hand, but they are all available on line. Guesstimate? 5 ft lbs. BUT check it out!!!
