ballsdeep
So I'm new too TT cam covers being na-t so I bought new bolts and new washers but I'm not sure on the correct way they should be fitted? I though they went with the brass bit facing up so started to torque it up using a half inch wrench and the bolt pulled through the washer? Is that how it should be? I stopped before it got to the correct torque setting as though it might not be helping using such a big torque wrench?
Lee P
Usually by hand and feel rather than torque Are they up side down Edited March 7, 2014 by Lee P (see edit history)

Lee P
what are these I have then? I got 16 of them off Chris Wilson Think they are upside down
Dnk
They look upside down to me and use a 1/4 drive ratchet not half inch, the torque on these are sub 10 ft lbs if i remember correctly
ballsdeep
Only got a 3/8 torque wrench but I left it in work, il use my 1/4 inch drive then. I have the metal / brass part facing up and the rubber side seated on the cam covers. Can we just confirm I need to flip them then? Thanks
MattP
Just fitted mine a few weeks ago you need the plastic part to the bottom and metal side up torque them to 5.5nm as stated in toyotas repair manual simples
clay
The rubber bit should be seated on the cam cover. Mate they don't look like genuine Toyota washers. I broke both my cam covers by not fitting the right ones. so I would recommend you get some from Toyota.
Dnk
Why is the head of the cap head going through the washer, well that's what it looks like its doing which it shouldn't do
ballsdeep
Now I am confused there is no plastic part to the washers I have? Just looks like a brass washer covered in rubber? Supposed to be genuine toyota washers bought from Chris Wilson (old stock)

ballsdeep
Why is the head of the cap head going through the washer, well that's what it looks like its doing which it shouldn't do That's what stopped me from tightening the rest..? But them again I was using a huge half inch torque wrench set to its lowest setting?
Dnk
Theres no plastic on them, there just a metal washer with a rubber seal on one side
MattP
My Toyota ones don't look like them and the ones that came off my stock VVTI are identical to my new Toyota ones they feel more plastic than rubber with a brass coloured top metal piece
ballsdeep
Theres no plastic on them, there just a metal washer with a rubber seal on one side that's what Iv got! I was sure I had the metal part seated against the bolts?

MattP
Yep the pic you have put up is the correct washers and nuts and bolts I have. No that kit you show in the google search is all you need no extra washers - - - Updated - - - In this picture it shows the head of the bolt going through the washer Yep certainly not how they are meant to be
Dnk
My guess is the washers are correct but the bolts or cap heads are wrong
ballsdeep
Glad I stopped when I did! So I'm guessing I need another washer with the s/s bolts I have, looks like the oem bolts have washers too.
