marbleapple
Evening all. The car won't start. Car alarm disarms no problem, key in the ignition turns on the lights and the dials but when I turn the key in the ignition I just get a loud tick tick tick (very quick ticking) from the engine bay. The car doesn't attempt to turn over. Any ideas to get it started? I'm on my phone so not sure how to search on tapatalk but is it a starter motor issue? Any ideas how to get it started to drive to a garage? Thanks Richard
Big Supes
That ticking will be your starter solenoid. Sounds like there isn't sufficient charge. Check the battery, battery terminals for corrosion or loose connections.
marbleapple
Thanks for the reply. So if I jump start or use a trickle charger do you think that will fix it?
Big Supes
Yeah, I would try jumping it. Trickle charge wont be much good. If it doesn't jump, check over the terminals. Good luck.

marbleapple
Dumb question but if I get it started and drive it to get the charge up, would the trickle charger then keep it charged? Appreciate I need to check the terminals.
Big Supes
Trickle chargers are good for maintaining a healthy battery, but if you battery was flat, it'll need a proper charge over night. You'll also need to investigate why it has died (check the alternator).
Al Massey
Trickle chargers are damaging to the battery. A battery should be drained and full charged. If you are storing a battery, just leave it and before use stick on charge. As mentioned the ticking is either dodgy connection on the terminals or a low battery. A jump kit will aid in starting, and a drive will charge the battery.
Gretie22
I have this problem it's the starter motor solenoid connections, need to buy the kit that quarryman said. I haven't got round to it yet, really need to fix it though as it's quite annoying, car always starts in the end though.
Marcus GTE
Have a read at this. I had the same symptoms you describe and simply cleaning up the connections solved my problem. http://mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?303759-Battery-not-charging-poor-earth-fix

I had the same symptoms you describe and simply cleaning up the connections solved my problem. http://mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?303759-Battery-not-charging-poor-earth-fix Marcus, Indeed I did and I think you'll find I was the 1st person to comment on your thread. In the world of weirdness, I think coming by your thread mayhave helped me no end this evening. A friend of mine turned up and pushed the car into my garage (he is a big guy) and under the light I spotted: So I have given them a good clean, a large amount of WD40 and tidied them up. I've also located a battery charger (not a trickle charger) which is currently charging the battery. Hopefully this will sort things until the weekend when the car was booked into the garage to fix a decent sized oil leak that had also started this week! I'm also going to order the parts for new terminals just as a precaution. Thank you for all your help everyone. I'll update the thread further when I learn more. I'm interested to see if the terminals are the route cause or whether it is something else.

Chris Wilson
Battery near flat or connections between battery and starter or battery and grounds bad, if it's a manual it should start with a push in 2nd or 3rd gear, or with a tow. If it's an auto a jump start might be the easiest. Unless the battery is totally goosed it should charge up in 30 minutes, given the alternator's OK, and re-start if not left un-run for too long. Good luck.

Chris Wilson
No, give it a hard tap if it won't turn, but eventually eve belting it one will not work, so act promptly.
jay200bhp
rebuild the starter. Great advice mate. ...or you could charge the battery first
mattdavies
I fixed it, No need to take the starter off. When trying to start it with the bonnet open I noticed the Negative battery terminal smoking, So I attached a jump lead to the engine and one to the Neg. Bettery terminal and Hey Presto she started. Now to renew the Negative lead from the Batter to the chassis
