Update.

So some may have seen a few forum members entered a competition on the Jimmy up Facebook page.

And I won.

So they seem to of finished there design for the tshirt. I'm a little disappointed as they aren't using the original image. But here's their finished design. It's still pretty awesome.

So I got the car back from paint. Any cracked on putting it back together. And she's now back on the road.

image

The oem plastic skirts make the car look so much better. And she got a much needed wash today.

It's a good thing the cars back on the road and running perfect as I've committed to my first track day on the 14th of March. My dads also committed our mx5 which isn't looking great. Hopefully should have it ready. Just need to finish the quarter. All welding has been done by me. Id never welded before starting on this mx5. So I'm quite happy with how it's going.

Track day.

So the day arrived and the cars were ready. Woke up to some awful fog but the ground was dry. Anyway we set of for Teesside, which became eventful when the mx5 nearly fell off the dolly due to a strap coming loose. But apart from that all was well. When we arrived the weather had cleared and it was turning into a beautiful sunny day.

image

image

So first time out on track. And I drove like a right pussy. A few laps later I came in and swapped into the mx5,

image

And drove like a mad man, I got a good feel for the limits of the car. So after a fair few aggressive laps I came in and swapped back into the supra.

Feeling much more confident about the track and the car I pushed more and more. Having more fun and driving a lot better. Until a loud bang.

Boost pipe had come off. In a place where I've never had one come off. Buried under the front chassis leg. Anyway left it to cool off and got the boost pipe back on. image

So after the fix I returned to the track. And after a fair few aggressive/tail happy laps I started to loose boost. It felt like I'd lost a turbo. After returning to the pits and letting the car cool down it turns out a vac pipe for the vsv for the second turbo had slipt off. Again a problem I'd never had on the road. Re secured the pipe and that was it till after lunch.

No problems in the afternoon. Just more aggressive driving in the mx5 and more tail happy laps in the supra. Overall I was happy with the supra. No major problems and it handled a lot better than I expected.

A few pics.

I know the pictures are crap quality. That's what happens when parents take pictures.

Anyway after coming away my dad loved it. So the mx5 will be getting Coilovers and a half cage. Hopefully before the next one.

And a random picture

Oh and jimmyup finalised the tshirt design. A lot better than I expected.

Yeah I know it is quite small. The supra struggled with a few corners but was overall good. At the end of the day a track day isn't a race day so I wasn't too worried about other cars. But yeah I drove the mx5 like an idiot. At the end of the day it wouldn't of been bad if I crashed the mx. It's worth more in bits anyway. But the mx is a brilliant car!

I would like to do Croft in the supra though.

You're doing a great job the car looks great. Wish I had your knowledge keep up the good work.

Thanks mate. I have learnt a lot over the years from my dad. And just getting stuck in. My dads a chartered mechanical engineer, and I'm a decontamination engineer. And with our unit we are getting stuck into more things.

nice one Jay, always wanted to do a track day in mine but now scared of chips and stuff #wuss LOL

What boost were you using mate? 1.4 BAR?

Thanks mate. I've always wanted to do one too. And I had a bit of peer pressure into doing it. The car wasn't great on track as it was too big with Teesside being a karting track. Would be great do do somewhere like Croft. As its quite a fast circuit.

I have a high and low boost. 1.2 low and 1.35 high. It's very rare I use the high boost as I don't like the power delivery.

Get some cheap second hand parts to turbo the mx5 it can be done for sub £1000 then stick pikey tech stickers on it.

I'm on collecting bits to do my cousins mx5 for summer

It's most likely down to how I have the controller set (which I pretty much guessed what I was doing). It seams more laggy. Like driving a single. All the power comes in one big hit in the lower gears.

  • 1 month later...

Well I haven't updated in a while. Basically I wanted my doors and bonnet to have a fresh coat of paint, parts stripped off and given to my painter. A week goes by and I pop in to see him and his compressor shit itself. Pressure switch malfunctioned which lead to the compressor over pressurising and blowing a load of oil out. So another week goes by, no paint.

The following week I offered him to borrow my compressor. Anyway he painted the parts and they look awesome. (No pictures)

Whilst the car was in bits my new gauge faces arrived from metal monkey via noz.

Managed to fit them without disturbing the calibration too.

TRD style

Whist I changed the dials I changed my LEDs back to stock 501 bulbs in the gauges. The dimmer switch didn't work afterwards which I didn't think much of. Out on a drive a few days later I felt something hit me on the knee but couldn't see anything. Parked up. On the return journey I though I will just try that dimmer switch, went to touch it and the knob was missing (what hit me on the knee) I proceeded to touch the dimmer and it was like touching the end of a soldering iron. It was red hot. The dash surrounding it was red hot. Managed to pull over and strip the dash out to find the dimmer switch had started to melt itself.

image

image

image

So I guess I got very lucky. Could of easily been a dash fire.

I've since fitted a new switch which works, I've left the dash panel off to monitor the temperature (which is cold)

Anyway fast forward to this weekend. Fresh tank of fuel, I took a friend out in the car who had never been in a supra. Anyway abit of spirited driving later and boom. Splitter disintegrated from a slight crack under speed.

image

The remains

image

Not only that but it managed to split the bumper along the inner edge where the under arch bolts in.

So it looks like I'm gonna order one of these.

image

All perfect timing as me and my lass have just bought our first house.

So the other week me and a few friends went for a drive to the lakes. And on the way back went via hartside pass. Some of the best driving roads in the country! Picked the perfect day for it too.

Went to a local midweek meet too.

And I eventually got my new lip fitted. And I must say I'm liking the black apposed to white.

We went to Windermere via a66 then some naughty back roads over the m6. Then up to Penrith via kirkstone pass and ullswater. Then hartside up to Hexham. 200mile round trip. The roads where amazing. But ruined by Sunday drivers, cyclists and a bus on kirkstone! The views where amazing though.

Thanks to Andrew K I ordered myself a pair of these:

These are the rubbers that sit either end of the scuttle panel and keep the scuttle pressed against the windscreen. Didn't get a picture fitted but they do work!

Attended a E85 meet with some of the northeast supra bunch at the weekend.

After a while we got asked to move, for more pictures.

This picture alone has convinced me the splitter is staying black.

With the weather being good and me being bored I decided to wax the car. I used tamz gold carnuba wax. An awesome product that is massively under rated. He won the best quick detailed review on car throttle. Well worth a look at his products. Just a local lad taking on the detailing giants!

Looked great. Then 10 minutes later....

Massive thunder and lightning storm which blew over quickly.

This is England!
