GSR2007

Recommended Posts

Hows things folks recently bought a tt supra with a w58 box I know these are the weakest manual box available but until funds allow for an upgrade it will have to do,

car only has a fmic, hks ssqv, apexi filter and cat back exhaust, I would like some info where to go from here as regards uping the power without killing my gearbox? and how do I fair out mapping wise can I just use a emanage or what is recommended?

all info would be great thanks in advance

You could BPU it (click the blue link which has appeared when 'BPU' is typed to see the parts list required) :)

However, the W58 will be at it's upper limit when putting that much torque through it so it may not last. It might last you ages without issue at all, but yet again it could fail very quickly.

My first Supra was a W58 NA-TT with about 360bhp and it was my daily driver for 4 years without issue, until the clutch went. Gearbox was still ok though. The only thing it didn't have compared with BPU was a first decat (downpipe). I was always nervous to fit one (I did buy one, just never actually fitted it!) just in case it caused the box to fail.

The hyperlink doesn't appear to be working, so here is the thread you want to read:

I would recommend at least a r154 box, as the w58 won't hold bpu (400rwhp). Seen them broken several times under 18psi of boost.

Not sure what boost you're running, but I would leave it at around 14-15psi until you have a better box.

Any piggyback will be fine. Personally I would go with a map-ecu, however people are getting great results with the emanage aswell.

You can find the r154 in the turbo MKIII Supras.

To do the swap you'll need the following from the top of my head.

1JZ bellhousing and flywheel

shifter extension

r154 clutch kit

r154 driveshaft (front half only)

Thanks for the help one last query when you say 1jz belhousing and flywheel is it from 1jz in the mk3 supra or the one that comes in the jzx100 chasers?? I may aswel gather these bits first think it would make the most sense then modify a bit would love to see 450-500hp safely

1jz flywheel will fit 1jz engine regardless of its chassis code.

Your need r154 slave cylinder and a chaser cross member.

Some w58 can handle mental power. Mine has handled 417bhp for AGES and when the torque or power kicks in, its fine. I blew it up smashing it into second from the red line. They don't like abuse or slicks. Your need an R154 if you do anything above 400.
