mk1its
Guys Just a few simple questions in regards to going 6sp. In 2013 I went the w58 5sp route and this year I'll be going either the v160 or v161 route. With having all the tunnel and pedal work done already, is it simply a case of buying a gearbox and prop and bolting it all together? Obviously I'll need a clutch and flywheel but can I use the diff from when I was auto TT and all the clutch/brake cylinders/lines/pedals from the w58 or are they all different? Thanks in advance Mark
David P
You'll need to swap the master and slave.
hogmaw
You'll need a 6 speed diff, the one with the auto TT will work but the ratios mean you'll be in 6th gear at 30-40mph!

hogmaw
Bunkum. Speaking from experience. So why my gear ratios wrong? Edited February 19, 2014 by hogmaw (see edit history)

hogmaw
Thanks for that. Can the ratios be altered then? I'm actually in the process of spending over £1000 on a new diff that might not be necessary!!!
David P
The crown wheel and pinion can be changed to alter ratio, yet it's a skilled procedure to shim correctly.
Benjy
I've just swapped out my A01A diff in my TT Auto for an A02B from my old V161 set up. The only difference is it goes sideways better and leaves 11's instead of 1's.

David P
There's no machining, just swap in the crown and pinion that gives the ratio you want.

You may be in 6th at that speed but what rpm?
Benjy
You may be in 6th at that speed but what rpm? My NA went from 20mph quite happily all the way round to 112 when I hit the brick wall that is the limiter.
hogmaw
There's no machining, just swap in the crown and pinion that gives the ratio you want. Which means I have to find a crown/pinion and get then find someone to fit them properly, might as well just get a ready-made 6 speed dif! Benjy
Some auto's had an A02B from the factory. It's not a 6 speed diff, just a LSD. What diff have you got currently?
