Guest Roger NE
I believe the exhaust manifold gasket is blowing slightly on my 2JZ-GE (I did re-use the gasket when fitting this engine, so that's probably why) First question - I presume the gasket is the same for the 2JZ-GE as the 2GZ-GTE? Secondly, I note that the gasket I currently have fitted is just plain aluminium (OEM?), whereas the gaskets I always used on my 7M were more like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-SUPRA-JZA80-2JZ-2JZGTE-Exhaust-Manifold-Gasket-/200786834154 I would have thought this type would seal better - what's the general opinion? David P
Stock is better than after market and N/A is different from T.T. Have a pair of one week used ones if you'd sooner not part with £50.
Guest Roger NE
So ARE the OEM ones just plain aluminium? (that's what I have at present) I would have thought the ones like in the ebay Ad would compress slightly, and therefore seal better (ie taking out any minor imperfections, which plain aluminium is less likely to do)
David P
The OE ones are multi-layer stainless steel. When they're old they go rusty in between the layers. The soft cheap ebay ones have a habit of blowing through. Take a look at the pic of the one in your link, you can see the left 2 ports, are pants. Guest Roger NE
Yes I can see that . . . not nearly wide enough at the top So do the multi-layer OEM ones LOOK like they're just a plain bit of alloy? (as I say, the one I have at the moment looks like that) The OEM ones used on the 7M engines look like they're made of a similar material to in that picture . . . with a criss-cross pattern in the soft metal And I have heard of people on here asking where they can get that type of exhaust gasket . . . that's why I was wondering
David P
The OE ones are multi-layer stainless steel. Guest Roger NE
Oh, don't think mine were like that . . . Pretty sure they were completely flat, like they had been cut out of a sheet of alloy Many thanks David
David P
Like they're called, they're multi-layered.
Guest Roger NE
This looks like a better version, but in the same kind of material I was thinking of getting Edited February 20, 2014 by Roger NE (see edit history)

Guest Roger NE
Same tat Really? They look more like the kind of exhaust gaskets I'm used to, as per the OEM 7M-GTE exhaust gaskets . . . and never known them to fail. I just can't help thinking you're likely to get a better seal with that "soft" kind of gasket.
Guigsy
Always had oem on my single. Tt and na and never had problems.
David P
Like I said in my first post. I have a pair of one week used OE gaskets that if I hadn't told you were used, you would never have known. You can have them for £15 inc P&P and I'll refund you if you're not happy with them. Guest Roger NE
Thanks David . . . well let me check exactly where the exhaust is blowing. I'm now thinking it may be on one of the two pipes that bolt to the manifold . . . again I just re-used the old gaskets when I fitted this engine. (These are the thick circular alloy ones that compress when you clamp the pipes together) Just bought two new ones (only £1 each!) so will try that first. Guest Roger NE
Fitted the 2 new exhaust crush gaskets between the 2JZ-GE manifold and the downpipes yesterday . . . And the exhaust is pretty quiet now ! (so I obviously had a slight leak there all along). Fortunately it WASN'T the manifold gaskets leaking. Lesson learnt - DON'T re-use those crush gaskets ! However, without the normal 2JZ-GE first Cat it IS still throatier than with the same exhaust system on my 7M engine ! By the way, here's a tip for anyone needing those circular crush gaskets . . . from Toyota they're £8 each! My local accessory shop didn't list the Supra in their exhaust suppliers, but they DID have various rings listed for other Toyota cars along with the Toyota part number that corresponded to their refs, such as TY4, TY5 etc. So I looked up the part number and told them, and they just ordered two of these these rings! (just 1 pound each) For example, the two rings I needed (where the 2JZ-GE Manifold joins to the 1st Cat) are TY5G / CEG23U / GEX556918 (one of those manufacturer's numbers should identify it) Edited February 25, 2014 by Roger NE (see edit history)
