Suprahitz
Hi guys. I've now owned my 1994 J-Spec TT auto for 6 months now. Had the car first serviced at Whifbitz when I purchased last year but thought time to give it another oil change myself for first time. It seems the oil filter is located in quite an awkward position. I found one thread about changing oil on driveway but the photos were removed. Another site advised about removing the battery to get better access to the filter. Is this true?
Josh
I had a lot of trouble removing mine as I could get a finger and thumb onto it but not enough force to turn it. This was trying from above and below. I finally gave up and hammered a screwdriver through it and it came off easily that way The proper way is to buy a ratchet strap tool (thing lol) specifically for removing oil filters Edited February 10, 2014 by Josh (see edit history)
garethr
Buy one of these: EDIT: Original equipment Toyota filters are 73mm x 14 flats Edited February 10, 2014 by garethr (see edit history)
bignum
Or a pair of these, a bit tight to get in but great tool for other things too, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DRAPER-61247-53-118mm-SELF-GRIP-OIL-FILTER-MULTI-PURPOSE-WRENCH-REMOVAL-TOOL-/160963114177?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item257a2634c1

Justin Bieber
Just get your hands down there and give it a twist Having said that, I don't have ABS so I guess access is easier for me.

Depends if you have girly arms too. Mine wouldn't fit. Maybe I should have tried using my left arm instead...
Suprahitz
Thanks guys will give it a go. I also have handy that draper chain tool thing which might come handy. No mention from anyone about removing the battery on theirs first?
Scooter
I undo the three 10mm bolts on the power steering reservoir and then you can gain a bit more space for your arm/hand and once it's off get the filter back up through the top. trebor69
I undo the 10mm bolt that supports the piece of loom that runs down that side of the engine and move it back towards the inner wing out of the way then whack a sharp screwdriver through the filter, making sure I have an old towel under it to catch the innevitable oil spill .......I have also made a ratchet strap out of a canvas belt before now but this was fiddly.......You could remove the battery but I don't think you would gain that much room. Mk4Gaz
I undo the three 10mm bolts on the power steering reservoir and then you can gain a bit more space for your arm/hand and once it's off get the filter back up through the top. This. Once you remove the three bolts, you can swing the power steering reservoir out of the way. I use one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-12-OIL-FILTER-ADJUSTABLE-WRENCH-REMOVAL-PLIER-TOOL-/231136115928?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item35d0c93cd8 and it's excellent - never failed me yet on numerous vehicles You'll obviously have to remove the undertray, to allow the remnants of oil to drain out properly
2soops
I've always removed the subframe brace underneath, only 4 bolts iirc and makes access a little better
