Si_s Supe
I've recently bought an NA that apart from some TRD split rims is totally standard. I really quite like how the stock exhaust looks, and since I'm saving for a mortgage deposit I can't really afford to splash out on a new system just yet. But it's sooooo quiet! Would like to hear a little it of the sweet I6 sound. After a fair bit of looking around, it seems stock systems originally came in two variants- 3 silencers and 1 silencer versions as in the pictures. Mine has the 3 box system, was considering getting the two small boxes deleted. Will this make for a sweeter sound without being ridiculous and boomy on the motorway? Anybody done it? I also removed second cat and had an OBX manifold and it sounded great. Not overly loud at all!
Si_s Supe
Ha, funnily enough I was just browsing parts earlier and was looking at the OBX header. What's the quality like. Reviews are mixed! Can you point me in the direction of your project thread please.
scott87
OBX was great. They ten to have a dent put in them to clear the steering Colin but this doesn't effect anything. Here u go. Page 2 I think. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?276741-Scott87-Project-N-A-First-Supra/page2
GMan
here is a pic of my obx fitted you can clearly see where tou have to dent the collector about 2mm or so. Jut get it red hot with a torch and 2-3 thwaps with a hammer will do And you will need to change to 1 wire screw in o2 sensors, which you can also see in the pic
GMan
I have a full obx mid mipe and cat back exhaust and it is loud! Scott87s mod of the stock exhaust is a better choice and problably much cheaper especially if you can weld yourself!

Always wondered what a stock exhaust would sound like with the silencers deleted.

I have one somewhere I will try and find it. The video is with the manifold and decatted. *edit* with windows closed http://s588.photobucket.com/user/langers_2004/media/2014-01-21091342_zpsf7371551.mp4.html Edited February 10, 2014 by scott87 (see edit history)

Si_s Supe
Scott, that looks really good and sounds great too! How much did it cost to fabricate if you don't mind me asking??
scott87
Scott' date=' that looks really good and sounds great too! How much did it cost to fabricate if you don't mind me asking??[/quote'] The second decat was from ebay for around 60quid, i picked the manifold up dirt cheap too. Fabricating cost me parts so came in cheap. I would expect to pay around 150-200 all in to have this made if you cant do it yourself or have a friend to do it cheap. Well worth it in my opinion. makes the car much nicer to drive. Mine may be coming off for sale though if you can wait. Im mapping the car on the weekend and if the exhaust is too restrictive im going to have to go for a straight through from first decat back so second decat will be for sale. Si_s Supe
To be fair, I'm not too fussed about decatting. I've heard it can make the NAs raspy and that's something I really don't want! I was thinking of just having the boxes taken out. I don't think it'd be totally necessary to have the whole length remade as in your photos? Should come in pretty cheap I'd have thought. Thing is, I will eventually fit a Whifbitz twin box so not much point in me spending loads on it!

What ecu/piggy back are you going for Scott, I am very anxious to see your results, please create a thread! Make sure you get an induction kit too http://www.importtuner.com/powerpages/impp_0105_1997_toyota_supra/ import tunner made 3.2 extra ponies with one all in all +22 automatic whp from a catback, cone air filter and an AFC neo is not bad for the investment. I'm going na-t it's all in my project thread which is being updated as I go If I sold that exhaust without second decat or backbox I would only want 60quid! Guest Roger NE
Si I don't know if you saw my thread about Exhaust Noise where I have fitted 2JZ-GE in my Mk3 Supra? Like you, I can't afford to splash out hundreds of pounds on a custom exhaust system . . . and actually I wanted to keep the car sounding as quiet as possible ! (as I drive fast, the LAST thing I want to do is attract attention from the Police!!) In my case, the simplest thing to do was cut the two pipes going into the first Cat and have them welded to the twin Mk3 downpipes. That should also mean 10+ bhp power gain removing the Cat. HOWEVER, the noise of the gases going down the downpipes I find rather loud/raspy! (even though the sound out the tailpipe ISN'T loud, as I kept all the silencers on my stock Mk3 system in place) I gather that you get a similar noise if you fit headers (obviously removing the first Cat too) . . . . SO I would agree with you that you're probably best keeping that first Cat in place. Why don't you just try bypassing the second Cat, and see how that sounds? I would also advise finding a nice friendly small local garage that fits exhausts but is happy to do a bit of custom welding. The garage that modified my exhaust only charged £30 ! (many places will charge a fortune!) Edited February 11, 2014 by Roger NE (see edit history)

Si_s Supe
Well, I've just picked the car up from having the boxes removed! (Sorry Scott, couldn't wait! Haha) Really happy! It's not QUITE as loud as I'd expected, but I'm more than happy! Just a nice, 6cyl note. No drone at all. I'm also very happy with the way it's been done too! It was dark and pissing down when I collected it so only managed to duck my head under the car, but they said I could go back on Saturday to get the car back on a ramp to inspect the work if I wanted.
