autobox problems?

Slightly different autobox question her.... I tried to drop the "2 litres" from the box today to replenish with fresh stuff but only 1.3 litres came out .....Am I right in thinking that this is because it was low on fluid anyway? I did check the level before draining but the car wasn't that "warm" so I'm not sure I read it correctly.

Be wary! I've read horror stories about ATF changes on these boxes! Evidently they need PROPERLY flushing and the internal filter changing or it can get blocked and cause pretty imminent failure!!

 

I'm a keen 'self-servicer', but I think that's a job I'll leave to a Supra specialist, most likely SRD!

Be wary! I've read horror stories about ATF changes on these boxes! Evidently they need PROPERLY flushing and the internal filter changing or it can get blocked and cause pretty imminent failure!!

 

I'm a keen 'self-servicer', but I think that's a job I'll leave to a Supra specialist, most likely SRD!

 

Scaremongering. The only horror stories are where people don't measure the level with the engine running, fluid an filter changes are no more challenging than cylinder head rebuild.....

 

Just kidding, only a ring of bolts and a couple of 10mm bolts.

the filter is just a metal screen type thing, changed it on a 200,000 k autobox and it was spotless, won't ever be changing it again tbh.

the only ways you will hurt your box is during an oil change are

A: put the wrong type of fluid in

B: not putting enough oil in, as already mentioned, the level needs to be checked with the car running at operating temperature on level ground and after cycling through all gears.

If not abused it is one of the best most reliable auto boxes on the planet.

I put another 300ml in today after a 5 mile journey where it was reading just short of the lower "HOT" mark, am doing an 80 mile journey on Wednesday so will check it then when I know it will be properly up to temp. I do have a new filter and cork gasket but am hesitant to break the seal on the autobox sump ......I know I should just grow a pair and go for it.......soon:rolleyes:

Checked gearbox level today after an 80 mile journey and the level is spot on :D ......although now it seems a bit hesitant to drop into 2nd on kickdown and prefers to only drop down to 3rd and then gradually build up from there........found myself twiddling my thumbs overtaking and waitimg for the usual rush ......the N/A rush that is.

You are driving it wrong

If i am less than 100kmh i pull the lever back to 2 and switch od off, 2nd gear is good to 120kph so at 115 push it into D. 3rd gear is good to 186 or so kph so at 180 push the od button. 4th gear would get you to 270 if you had the power, I've only ever got to 245 on the gps, my speedo is wrapped back around to almost 0 at this point.

It used to drop into 2nd easily off kickdown but has changed slightly since having the fresh fluid and filling to correct level but ok, I get what you are saying, I need to use the selector and buttons more rather than leaving it in D all the time......which leads me to another question as I am toying with having a laugh and trying it on the strip at Santa Pod......What is the quickest way to get down (gear selection wise) the track ....O/D off and all manual selection ?
