1UZ-FE VVTi v8 5 speed Manual swap. Some help needed

Hi!

Finally got all the parts needed for 2JZ-GE Manual to 1UZ-FE VVTi v8 5 speed Manual SWAP. Things looking good so far and will start pulling my 2JZ out tomorrow hopefully. I had spent few night searching forums, but its not so easy with VVTi v8s as non VVTi ones... Have got most of the wiring found, but still some bits missing.... If anyone has any experience or wiring info, your help would be highly appreciated.

I will add some Pics later on :)

Many thanks!

Are you going with an aftermarket ECU? The VVTi ecu needs a security bypass to work. Where is your motor from? LS400?

Have a trawl here if you are missing anything:

http://oldschool.co.nz/2011/forum/index.php?/topic/30736-how-to-wire-up-a-1uz-engine-vvti-and-non-vvti

Very interested in your project :eyebrows:

Ive got '98 LS400, and starting with vvti ecu. Have some thoughts how to bypass the immobilizer. Another thing - I have heard some problems with manual gearboxes on these, as they only start if ecu gets P signal from the gb, but limits power untill it gets D.

I have already got all the diagrams and manuals and studying :innocent:, but theres like 1600 PDF pages.... omg  I wish it was faster way :D But thanks for the link anyway!

This guy "George R" in Moscow is offering to bypass the security for quite a bit less than Cartune.nz.

I'm not technical enough to help you myself with the details, but you could ask Nodalmighty (Lyndon) about your problem with the gearbox. He's helping me in big way right now. I'm pretty sure the stock ECU won't like not finding the A650 attached but the motor will run. There might be some useful info here you could use: http://www.lextreme.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15689

Also, you might need to change the LS400 sump over to a Soarer one. The LS400 one doesn't fit well with the Supra.

I think the Soarer only had a non-VVTi V8 so yes, a non VVTi will go on. This was done to mine by the guy that built my car a few years ago. Swapped the sump out to a Soarer one. This is the same for the non-VVTi 1UZ if it came from an older LS400.

From Lextreme 1UZ Q&A info:

"The oil filter mount on a rear sump engine fouls the sway bar on a Supra; the Crown remote type rear oil filter assembly fits but makes oil filter access a little difficult (depending on fuel line location). I ended up getting a custom sway bar made that cleared the factory oil filter mount.

Many conversions will still require the steel sump bowl to be modified to a minor extent to clear things that want to occupy the same space. Usual story – trial fit it and chop off anything in the way!"

Mine is currently fitted and being connected up. By the end of the month it should be wired up and ready. I sent my ECU to New Zealand to have it security bypassed. Cost a fair bit, but apparently this George guy on Lextreme has recently done his own bypass and is a lot cheaper. Was you planning on doing the security bypass yourself?

So what about the oil filter mount? Is it different on LS400 than SC400? If yes, you need to take one from SC and problem solved, if not - there shouldnt be a problem. Have you got the problem with yours?

Honestly, I am worried about the immobilizer least. I have got the original complete immobilizer with wiring and signal reader, I only miss the key, but I have all the paperwork and service codes of the LS400 I took the engine from, so hopefully the dealer can make another key for it. If not, I know one guy who could bypass immobilizer here in UK. On the worst case scenario, I dont mind to put custom ECU, as Ive done few already, and the wiring is much easier than wiring the vvti ecu lol.

I am a bit worried, as I didnt find how to wire up those two separate sockets, one by the ecu and one by the battery so far. And Yes, you got me unprepared with the sump :D :D

Is it really bad with the bonnet? Where did u take your engine from? Have u got some pics of yours?

Thanks for all these tips mate!

Not sure about the oil filter mount position. It's been a long time since I've compared them both.

Mine is still being worked on. It is from a a 97 LS400 when they just brought VVTi in. The bonnet needs about 1/2 inch clearance. Hopefully as a temporary measure the height at the hinges can give enough clearance until I decide how to sort it properly.

Glad you have the electrics in hand. That issue cost me lots.. :(

If you are using the LS400 ECU, like I am, the speed signal to the dash is in CanBus, so you will have no speedo if you don't get around that. Regarding those sockets, Nodalmighty may be able to help more than me.

I'm still sucking and seeing at the moment. The rear speed sensor is VR not Hall so there is a problem right there. The rpm pulse is 8 per 2 turns, there is another problem too. The gear box and shifter have about 20 wires into the ecu so that is going to cause issues if going manual. Going manual will require a stand alone ecu. EMU, Syvecs S6, Link Storm/Extreme (or Link's ViPec), Motec m800 will support VVti and this will cure all your ill's, speed limiter, immobilizer, rpm and Speedo.

I've done the full pin out diagram set of the ecu and I've also pined out the 2 extra connectors in the engine loom. I have the pin diagrams table for the supra orange, grey and white connectors (inc variants) from a 1JZ conversion I did.

We are now stepping into the world of Can Bus and OBDII comm systems and things are getting had for the home conversion builder. I've had to invest in can bus sniffers and all sort of other electronic tools to go forward.

Lyndon.
