Stock NA Air Intake Question

Samsar

Recommended Posts

Evening all,

I'm going back to a stock set up for my NA and have got all the bits apart from one part.

The part that goes from the air filter box across to top of the fan is missing and am wondering

if it'll be ok to block it off?

I'm thinking it should be as this is what I've currently got in it's place.

What do you guys thinks?

I might just put it in the for sale section then but I'm not sure what it's worth?

As I've had that on my car since I bought it I'm unsure on the stock setup so if it's ok I'll ask a couple more questions.

So this is the stock system image

What is supposed to be inside these two sections?image

nothing there just big chambers designed to stop induction noise
No, those chambers under the intake tubing are actually there to improve performance !

They're resonators that change the standing waves in the intake, to improve power across the rev range

Do you think Toyota would go to all the extra expense of designing them and then incorporating them in the intake just for fun?!

On the Mk3 Supra there is a much simpler Resonator in the piping . . . but even that one improves the power curve (I remember seeing a Dyno sheet with and without it from somebody in the States ages ago)

I've noticed that a lot of people seem to remove stuff like this (including the Stock air filter) only to make performance WORSE!

I understand that Toyota put that bit I'm missing on the system for a reason, but do you think I'll get away with not having it and just blocking the hole up?

I wouldn't, unless you do some clever airflow tests how do know how much air flows through it ?

There are only 2 intakes and this one has a bigger surface area than the one under the headlight

so it could potentially flow more than half of the air into the airbox.

Get the other feed fitted is my advice and leave the airbox open till you do.

That one is from the Fan Cowling, right?

So presumably the idea is that it RAMS some air into the intake (and the faster the engine revs, the faster the fan is turning)

Like a little bit of Supercharging !

It draws air from infront of the rad so the fan makes no difference as far as i

can see other than drawing air through the rad which could intern draw air up to

the intake

Heres a pic of it on my car

You just wanted to show off that stunning engine bay ;)

Thanks for that information guys. :)

I haven't fitted it yet so I'll source the part I need before I go for it.

 the more cold air you can feed into the airbox the better, sucking in hot air from the engine

bay or blocking off half the air feed can only have a negative effect.
