Tommyd16
May sound a daft question but how do I check coolant levels? Have little expansion tank on front of radiator with a in there and check the top of the radiator and that is about full. Is this correct? Guest Budz86
Yep. Also, make sure it's not a really dirty looking reddish brown, it's bright red when new
Tommyd16
It's pretty red. How much should be in the tank at the front. There is just a wee bit in there
Josh
It's pretty red. How much should be in the tank at the front. There is just a wee bit in there If it's a standard expansion tank, on the left hand side there are minimum and maximum levels
Tommyd16
So I just this needs topping up then as there was about a cm in there. How come there is another cap on the radiator?
LOGIE
Look carefully at your expansion tank (plastic one) there will be a max and a min level. Keep it just under the max. Also if there is about a cm in there keep an eye on it as you may have a coolant leak. The cap on the rad is for filling after changing the radiator. Havard
I would get it topped up and check it regularly. Running without enough coolant is bad and I wouldn't put too much faith in the stock temp gauge as they are not the best. New head gasket anyone? Tommyd16
Cheers topped up the expansion tank. Will keep an eye on it. Looks like I have an original radiator so it being 18years old it might need replacing
Tommyd16
Got no mayo any where and temp seems fine

It had been in the UK all its life though, unlike Jspecs (if that's what you have).
Tommyd16
Yh jspec. How much is a new rad if I need one? And best place to get it?
Scooter
You may have a weak rad cap, take yours off and inspect the bit that lives in the radiator neck, it should have a nice rubber seal, for the few quid they are I'd be tempted to get a new one if you think it looks the age of the rad. Tommyd16
Cheers I'll look into it
LOGIE
Yh jspec. How much is a new rad if I need one? And best place to get it? "If" You need a rad get a genuine toyota one. Are you NA or TT? Manual or auto? TT ones are thicker than NA and auto cars have a built in gearbox cooler in the rad. TT rad was £330ish when I checked about 6 months ago. As already mentioned check the basics first. Rad cap etc. Oh is you passenger footwell wet?
Tommyd16
TT auto. Just ordered a new rad cap. Foot well is fine I think. Just bought the car last week so just thought I would check the coolant as I just realised I haven't done it yet :s
Tommyd16
Done abit of research on google. Some people are saying the hose going into the heater matrix can split. Can anyone put a picture up of this hose please. Weather is horrendous outside! I will have a look when its dryer
