Acetone

Would it not be better to add the acetone first and then fill up fuel to number of litres required, so the 2 liquids get mixed together better.

Ive found mutliple articles on Acetone today & this theory. Acetone has the qualities to mix and blend perfectly (i dont know scientific words) As in if you put in water it would mix and be not visable. But Nic your right any help to the mixing cant be bad.

Ill have more of a read up on other articles i can find on the subject. But i still dont see how this will break down the oil particles in the fuel as surely Fuel has different properties to Oil itself? (i.e way its constructed / made)

I've been looking into this further and I've decided to give it a try, 40cc in a tank should be safe I'd hope.

There is quite some room for improvement when it comes to 100%atomisation. Hell, even 'advanced' fuel injected engines like the 2JZ need coolant paths through the intake manifold.

I thought that the rushing/chopping action of the compressors, the deliberate swirl and quench zones would be enough to atomize the lot in a hot engine like this one --- but going carefully through books and papers it looks like we're not there yet.

It would be interesting to see if acetone really does the trick, as this guy claims

John im never sure if you did do this but i have been:

At the time of filling up tesco 99 was 99.9p (at least that made it easy to know how many litres id put in)

Now im no scientist so these results are not gonna be technical :D

I have been putting low levels of Acetone in for 3 x20 litre stints.

these are the mileages i got:

130km spirited drving with general conservative driving

170km 1 spirited drive

109km not sure if my foot got off the floor

total of 409km = 250miles to 60litres / £60 worth

Now i guess u could say this is average to what you may get from a tank, but this has been all driving to work and back 25min journey total of 14miles each way so short journeys.

This works out about 19MPG, for some very spirited driving (foot to the floor, kick down and to well over 100leptons on my private track) and relaxed driving too. It should be noted i am BPU to.

Now here's the next test, the current tank i am on will be the last im putting the acetone in, so as the traces of it remove from the system it will be interesting to see how my mpg goes.

Questions i have is:

when at BPU what mpg do you expect?

Is 250miles for 60 litres good, i guess it would be about another 30miles for a full tank of doing short journeys and not motorway driving.

I was gonna be doing this with my NA but put the acetone in the garage and completely forgot.

I didn't see *any* mpg difference with acetone on the supra.

Either that US guy was full of it, or their engine/fuel combos are very different (could well be the case)

Maybe if an engine has trouble evaporating the fuel, then it does make a difference, who knows...But the supra intake is consistently 30C+ over ambient and that helps fuel evaporation a lot.

I'd feel uncomfortable using more acetone in the tank because I don't know what effect it will have on the oxygen sensor and the wideband, let alone fuel pump, injector seals etc.

I use a lot of methanol under boost, and that cools and evaporates like a dream. Doesn't help off-boost mpg obviously, but we can't have everything, can we?...

Exactly the same here, i think your probably right about the american engines. They seem to like just dumping as much fuel into a big litre engine and see how it goes, fuel economy doesnt seem to matter to them.

Acetone like methanol would be better if "pre-mixed" with the fuel before being added rather than poured in before or after petrol, and tbh i have been told by my chemists here at work (i work for ici) to "if in doubt stay well clear":(

I have also done some testing here on our mass spec machine with different combo's of fuel (starting with ultimate, and tesco 99), and have come up with a mixture which contains some cancergenic gear incl toluene, but no acetone! (as toly is also a very good inj cleaner..)...

The reason i started playing around was because of the cost of race fuel such as C16 etc....

Tell us more!:) Would love to know the makeup of optimax. Can your mas spec do that?
