simbasupra
Hi guys Currently have my engine out and stripped down. I've seen a few threads where the block has been painted. And was wondering what the best preparation for this is? Also are the heads and sumps prepped the same? Cheers
Rich.2211
I just used the foam 'Gunk' to clean the block and then Hammerite Smooth straight over the top. It's been absolutely fine, heat hasn't effected it at all
simbasupra
I've got a few patches of flaky rust so i'm thinking wire brush, "gunk" then paint? Does the hammerite smooth need primer? Also i've heard other people mention hot wash, acid dip? would these just do the same as "gunk"?
Mk4Gaz
You won't need primer to use hammerite on the cast block. But if you want to paint any aluminium parts, you'll need to use an Etch primer first bud

Do people normally paint these two parts or just clean them?
Mk4Gaz
Yes bud For the amount of cylinder head you see, id be inclined to just give it a good clean
simbasupra
Is that gunk stuff OK to use internally on the block, head and sumps? Or is it for the outside only?
Mk4Gaz
If the block is in bits, then it'll be absolutely fine. I used tfr diluted on mine, then pressure washed it off in the garden. Then a rag soaked in petrol to get into the last bits. After painting the block, I soaked a rag in duck oil, and wiped it around the bores, to prevent rust leading up to machining
Guest Roger NE
I'd suggest using proper Engine Lacquer . . . it's no dearer than Hammerite, but is designed to withstand high temperatures Before fitting the new s/h engine in my car, I gave it a quick clean just with a cloth and White Spirit, then slapped the paint on with a brush. Although most are Gloss, I actually chose a Satin Black one . . . made the block and sump look really nice.
