Tsia
Hi guys, Completely at random and after a pretty tame drive, I got home and my Supra was billowing smoke. Apologies for the bad position of the video, I only had some grass to hold my phone up Any thoughts? My first idea was turbo oil seals, but they were only rebuilt 20k miles ago by CR turbos. Still a possibility I suppose..
Rich.2211
If it's all white smoke I was always led to believe it was coolant burning, not oil? Unless it's blue in the vid and it's just my eyes
Tsia
I've let it cool a little bit and started it up, no bubbles in the coolant and the coolant all seems fine. The colder the car is, the less visible smoke there is. Looks like seals
Dnk
That doesn't look too good to me, its not valve stem seals for sure
Mk4Gaz
If it's blue, it might be rings, if it's thick white, it could be a cracked piston (doubtful), or turbo oil seals I'd do a compression test, just to be sure
Tsia
Maybe it's a sign I need a single.
Dnk
Maybe it's a sign I need a single. Or a new engine
Tsia
Seems drastically unlikely, it was/is running perfectly smoothly, just very smoky.
Tayfun.tugra
Whats the oil level and what's it look like? Is there a creamy aspect to it? What you really need is a leak down test. Tsia
Oil level is fine, doesn't need changing either. No creamy aspect to it at all. I took the filler cap off and gave it a little blip of the throttle a few times and got no smoke.
Chris Bailey
Headgasket?
ccssupra
Thats shit mate, Could it be turbo gaskets at all?
Tsia
Headgasket? Coolant doesn't bubble when it's revved at all and looks entirely fine. Not sure how else to check really.
GMan
As it gets worse with temp and not better it is deffinately not valve stems. I would say turbo seals or rings but since the oil looks good and no smoke from the filler cap it is mostlikely a turbo seal. Good compression results would confirm this. TheTurtleshead
That is a lot of smoke. Take an intercooler pipe off just before the throttle body. It might be blathered in oil in there if a turbo had gone badly enough to cause that much smoke. Is it making any weird noises at all? Misfiring? I don't mean to be negative though.. but I had an MX5 that was like that. Turned out to be the oil scraper rings were fecked. Tsia
No strange noises, not misfiring or anything like that. Just lots of smoke and that's it. :|
Pulley
I know you say you haven't got bubbles in your radiator, but that looks quite steamy to me I'd say you have a coolant leak in either your head or turbo
LOGIE
I know you say you haven't got bubbles in your radiator, but that looks quite steamy to me I'd say you have a coolant leak in either your head or turbo This would be my guess also
Tsia
Waiting for the weather to calm down before I go and look again, hailstones and lightning now!
Pulley
If your not getting bubbles or pressurisation it may be a turbo waterway has cracked and is leaking into the exhaust I've seen this in quite a few water cooled turbos
Tsia
Well, paint me clueless for that one. If that's the case, is that a rebuild job, or just a case of replacing something easy? (ish.)
Tsia
I just went out for a quick cold start check now the weather has calmed, no puff of smoke on startup and no smoke at all idling cold.
drew 007
Hot side seal on the turbo??
thetrashcanman
I'm honestly 99% sure it's the oil seals on the turbos mate, especially if it's not doing it from cold. It looked blue on start up
