2nd Turbo hit not so prolific!

Hope you guys can make some suggestions, here goes:

Had just driven from Berkshire to Kent and was accelerating up a dual carrageway on half'ish throttle enough to still get a hit on the second turbo but not lots of fuel which is worrying me now. The car for the first time ever missed on the second turbo so I backed off gently cursing. A couple of miles later as the car felt normal gave it WOT more missing more cursing.

Next day decided to do more WOT testing, no missing, holding 1.2 bar lovely but not the normal enjoyable hard hit on the second turbo, still a hit but reduced. Its seems quieter now with less overun. Now very unhappy and worried.

Am gonna change the plugs when I get home Tuesday (Do you think it may be this simple?) do you guys have any idea what else I might have done or what else to check? It sounds perfect when running...but feels almost like I have refitted the first CAT. :(

Next stop will be to put it in for a service and rectification at a Supra specialist. The most annoying thing is I was made up with the performance of the car in its current tune it felt spot on/amazing for road work.

Thanks in advance,

Darren

At the risk of sounding like the man at deaths door it could be that No.2 turbine has lost a blade or two or a boost control pipe has come loose. Try doing a search on this list for 'death whine' or 'loss of boost' and it might give you a few pointers.

It would be unlikely for a 98 car to lose the turbos but it has happened.

We always fit HKS S40i plugs (grade 8) and an uprated fuel pump to all Jap spec cars now if we do a regular 1.2 bar upgrade. If this hasn't been done then it may be an issue and could certainly increase the possibility of a high boost missfire.

Sorry I couldn't be more help but I would need to do some further diagnostics on the symptons.

Cheers,

Thanks Nathan,

Car was rollin roaded at current spec plus one CAT and fuelling was apparently spot on but an uprated fuel pump was on the list of wants.

I must admit I 'felt like a man at deaths door' and was/am worrying over turbo no 2's health. I cant even get excited bout hybrids at the mo as opion seems to be that they may not be worth the money (See Chris Wilson post).:( :(

No death whine at mo and it does hold 1.2bar. Would it do this if I had a boost leak?

Thanks,

Darren

Not :p this week!

Could it just be heat soak or ambient air temps?

It could just be the air temps under the bonnet or the incomming ambient air was a little warmer (as yes we've had a couple of warmer days now).

Obviously warmer air means less dense air charge and hence less bang! Especially at higher RPMs as the turbos heat up the charge and make the intercooler work really hard.

Try it on a cold morning... does it do the same?

Plugs could be a factor which is being accenuated by the leaner mixture, higher ambient air temps.

Do you have a replacement air filter?

Could be heat soak over such a long journey and again IC cannot cope.

I'd recommend getting your car dynoed on a nice warm sunny day. Then you know if all is well, then that it'll be fine all year.

Never trust a dyno done in winter to last all year!

Regards

Pete

Nathan, isnt the fuel pump mod just as good as buying an uprated fuel pump, as I read before that stock fuel pumps turn out to be better than the HKS ones, hope Im not talking crap here.....

Problem occurred at 22:30 at night so it was not very warm. So not sure about air temps...

I do have and HKS induction kit fitted....plus a FMIC.

Its just not funny when you notice a drop in performance for no obvious reason!

I nearly dyno'd the car after the last remaining CAT was removed to note the difference but didn't get round to it. Now I wish I had as it would be the easiest way to see if anything was wrong and how much BHP had disappeared.

Thanks for the input,

Darren
