Mk4Gaz
Hey guys, I stumbled across the thread the other day about changing out the auto shifter, in favour of a manual look. Â Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that my car is an auto, but the stock shifter and surround is a little dated looking. Â So after a couple of hours of tinkering, I disable the shift lock, and moved the manual mode and overdrive buttons to the blanks under the stereo. Â Much better! j_jza80
Looks great, but would look better with a plain gearknob IMO. I was considering doing this a few years ago, after seeing this: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?172889-Nice-mod-for-auto-owners-%29&highlight=manual%20auto

j_jza80
I'd love to see someone rep;ace the stock auto shifter with a HOTAS multifunction throttle lever. With all those buttons, imagine the possibilities...
Dazzi
Nice work mate. How did you attach the gear gaiter under the auto gear surround?
firin Supra
Just a quick 1 how do you manage to use park and first gear?
Dazzi
He disabled the shift lock so I'm guessing you just pull the gear stick into gear. The other way is pushing the gear knob down if you still have shift lock.

This is the next job on my list. How easy is it to remove the old knob?
Mk4Gaz
It's a dead easy mod to do guys, wish I'd done a 'how to' now. I'll whip it back apart, take some pics, and do a write up. Â It requires a little bit of wiring, but nothing major at all

thomo8568
You don't really need a write up as it isn't to hard to do. I had a go with mine after seeing this. This is how it looks. Needs a better gator tho. Knob pushes down to move
FOSTA
This looks pritty cool! And it stops the Chavs that havnt got a clue about these cars staring through the window and saying. "Oh it's an auto!" Lol Well rafts what I always get from them lol. So how do you make it so it pushes down to change gear? Is there a write up anywhere about this? I'm living the idea of getting a blank gear knob engraved with the auto positions

I'm living the idea of getting a blank gear knob engraved with the auto positions  It's just a cheap knob off eBay that is spring loaded that allows you to push down to move gear position. The hardest part is moving the manual and OD buttons and making it look nice. This is the knob I used. http://bit.ly/OlXjaK
Guest suprageek
Does it just screw onto what's left of the shifter once the top part is taken off?
thomo8568
Yes. Just a few grub screws hold it in place.
Guest suprageek
So if I want to keep the shift lock how do I keep that with the new knob?
thomo8568
I've still got the shift lock with mine. You just need to find a push down knob or one with a button on the top.
j_jza80
Get a nice, plain leather one, and get it embossed. OEM+ FTW.
Mk4Gaz
Today I've done a bit more to the mod, although I'm still planning on making a threaded adaptor so a stock leather gear knob will screw on, that I'm having retrimmed in black leather with red stitching.  I've moved the auto shift pattern to the side, added some red ohp film to the back of it, and wired leds inside to illuminate with the gear selection.   And a quick video. Although, I'll do a better one tonight when it's dark  http://s625.photobucket.com/user/Gary1180/media/Dash%20gauges/20140301_143545_zpsiynkafhy.mp4.html
