j_jza80
Miles..... it was a "rebirth" of the AE86 I know they say that, but it was equally a Celica replacement. The AE86 was a hot hatch, the GT86 is a coupe.
j_jza80
It's quite obvious now that the FT-1 really was THE car of the Detroit motor show. Toyota must be overwhelmed with the amazing reception the car has received. However, that does not guarantee production, the simply amazing Jaguar XK180 concept probably had created even more hysteria, and it sadly didn't make production. Its quite simple, to eat a proper meal you need a knife, fork and a spoon. Toyota have the knife, they have the fork, the gt 86 may be the spoon... but they are missing the ice cold drink... Tayfun.tugra
Yes, I forgot to say...some if not a lot of imagination must be used for my comparison to work. As you can probably tell, I was hungry at the time. now that I have eaten: Toyota need a high performance sports car in the range.

GMan
Stock supra spoiler is a bit too retro for this car, the retractible one looks good IMO but it does kind of scream to the police "HEY LOOK I WAS JUST EXCEEDING THE SPEEDLIMIT!" Nic
I prefer the original concept, it looks very dramatic and unique which is what the new Supra should be, I hope the production car, if it's made, isn't watered down too much. The only part of the concept which I don't like is the transparent bonnet, which is a bit naff IMO. tony tt
Seemingly it's confirmed from the CEO at Toyota this will be built as the new Supra. No engine info as yet though. http://m.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.motoring.com.au%2Fnews%2Fsports%2Ftoyota%2Fconfirmed-toyota-ft-1-is-next-supra-41509&h=yAQGbJpv-&enc=AZMuZrPkaMdHcWlp3kqXoMpzbdTO_IiVUIqTCA1gd31kG9N6sWl28hbflcC7tbi0VYfFwNcbr_5q5Cds_R-ZJdTsf-MxHgdbNUPu7fqpSVNI_rWyj2iAaZzv8ZPRDyeaUH2UA5ELnsZRA8gdePJ8xCxl&s=1 http://www.7tune.com/news-toyota-ft-1-is-the-new-supra/ Edited February 8, 2014 by tony tt (see edit history)
Attero
Supra spoiler looks silly on it. Yes, the supra looks great and probably always will but its full and partial look has no place in the modern market. Having said that, the front bumper does look better in the photoshopped version. Twisted
They should have a wrap around dash like the mkiv. One of my favourite features

Fly
Sweet, we guessed it would be in the region of 400 bhp . So there's the 2.0 4 cylinder and a 2.5 v6 it's going to be like thd tt vs na all over again
AJI
2.5L should be a revvy little thing then. 400bhp on the standard 'top spec' model is a good starting point for many. Not sure why they would bother with a 2L version though. I was hoping they would be looking at 450bhp-500bhp level as a starting point, modern sports car performance levels sort of demand it these days. Jamesy
Surely they will produce a 500+hp car from factory if they really want to get people buying them, instead of GTR's.....
AJI
I am hoping the new Supra will not be pitched against the GTR......which is why I am glad they are going for RWD and not 4WD. The Skylines have always been a very different car to the Supra and cover very different driving experiences that suit particular drivers. I always saw the Supra MkIV more pitched against the Porsche 911 to be honest. The new Supra I'd have thought to compete with this particular market should be offering 911 GT3 levels of performance at a price significantly cheaper than the 911 GT3. If this can be done with a compact 2.5L turbo in a smart looking shell then all is good. With the addition that to draw punters on to this car rather than the usual 911, I'd have thought it would demand 450-500bhp. But then I guess it will depend on the torque figures they manage to produce and how the power is delivered.
j_jza80
I wonder if they are perhaps considering a compact inline 5 engine, based on the LFAs engine architecture? That would sound fantastic!
Guigsy
Suspicious of that article. I'm sure the trademark was reported to have been placed/refreshed whatever 3-4 years ago They have said numerous times it's not going to be a hybrid. That bonnet is far too long for a v6 as well. 2l turbo? So a super car with a hot hatch engine. That will sound shit, Yawn! We know how great sounding and fast the gt86 is...
