Pig
As those that know me are aware, I don't use the car very often so it is difficult to say when this noise started. I recently… approx 6 months/200 miles ago changed the brake disks all round and have noticed a strange clicking noise from the NSR. I had a mate who is a mechanic listened to the noise and I told him about replacing the disks. He suggested it was likely that the handbrake shoes were catching and that I should round off the leading edge. I got round to doing this today but it has not solved the problem - Please can you watch the video and let me know if you have heard a similar noise before. It only really does the noise when going forward and continues to make the noise with the handbrake on and the brake pedal being pushed. I cannot replicate the noise by manually turning the wheel. I also jacked the car up on the diff and let the wheels run and that also did not make the noise. I feel it can only be: 1. Brake related 2. Wheel bearing 3. Drive shaft Please ignore the squeaking as that is my clutch pedal. I know I can take it to a garage to sort but I don't have anyone local to me hence why I haven't already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mznBlz0dqM8 P.S - How do you embed videos again? Guest Budz86
I've just had a look at that vid John and not sure whether it's just my laptop, but makes it hard to hear a clicking noise over the exhaust! lol Couple of things though, have you checked for play in the wheel bearing? Do the callipers all move freely? Seals in good condition? Drop links not looking worn and are torqued correctly? No uneven pad wear? Anti squeal shims and spring clips all fitted and clean? Worth having a quick check of these things before getting it to a mechanic. Sounds like it could be the bearing, although I would have expected that to make a noise even when turning the wheel by hand.

Swampy442
Maybe a CV joint? Maybe a stone or something trapped between the disc and the dust shield?
LOGIE
Brake shoes not adjusted properly? Or came loose
Paul Whiffin
Wheel bearings can make this sound John, could be that mate.
bignum
I had very similar sound and was wheel bearing, however the play was minimal.
Paul Whiffin
I had very similar sound and was wheel bearing, however the play was minimal. We've had them where there is no play at all, just clicking noises.
Pulley
Wheel bearing I'd say, sometimes if the internal race cage has even one link damaged the ball rolls back in one direction to bind against the ball behind it, and in the other direction sits where it should Unfortunately you can usually only re-create these noises with the bearing loaded with the weight of the car so spinning it up in the air doesn't work I'd change the bearing
Pig
Thanks all, really appreciate all the input. I will now look to replace the bearing. By the looks of this link, its not a job for home? http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?217396-Wheel-Bearing-Replacement Is it an easy job for most garages? Any reason not to go for a ECP bearing over a toyota?
Guest Budz86
I did mine mostly at home Jon, but it was a bit of a pig (excuse the pun! ) Lots of penetrating fluid, a breaker bar and a decent sized ball joint splitter are key here! Only thing I couldn't do was press out the old bearing and press in the new one....local garage did that for £20 though. Labour time at a garage would be about 3-4 hours iirc, but that will depend on nothing being seized. I'd allow that just to remove it at home though. I got a bearing from SRD as it was the cheapest price and Lee has fitted loads of them so quality is known to be good I can e-mail you the PDF from the workshop manual for a light read if you'd like? Slightly easier than reading it in the thread above Edited January 13, 2014 by Budz86 (see edit history)
Guest Budz86
BTW; I didn't bother taking the drive shafts off, just undid everything that bolted to the hub and a little tap had it free
trebor69
I had a similar problem and eventually found that one side of my handbrake cable had seized and therefore no longer held the shoes under tension and they would clunk and rattle about in the drum part of the disc .......only found out by testing handbrake effectiveness on rollers .....Did my head in for months.......after listening to vid though i'm not so sure. Pig
More vids Out driving https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysRlRWqA96o Crawling https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdvSaI2W58A Manual turn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40E0I6xhep8 After hours spent trying to find this fault, I called on Supraloopy for help - It didn't take him long to diagnose that the wheel bearing was loose. Tightened it up and no more noise. Thanks for everyones input/help. Jon
