LOGIE
I should know this for a fact but im unsure. I'm running stock power with cw smic, 3" tanabe touring exhaust with 2.5" 1st decatt and 3" 2nd decatt. I have NO fcd or boost controller or uprated fuel pump yet. Do I need to fit a 1 bar restrictor ring? Stay classy.
Dnk
I'd have thought so followed by the fcd and bc so you can play at 1.2 bar
Wez
Jap or UK car? If its a UK motor then no you dont, for a jspec you should yes, as DnK has already said, get an FCD fitted and ramp the boost up
LOGIE
Cheers guys. So it is safe to boot it with just a res ring in between the decatts?
supra_ufo
you need the FCD otherwise it will overboost and go limp...is it a J spec or UK?
Dim Sum
Yup, if you want to go above one bar you need a Fcd, otherwise it be pointless to have a boost controller.
LOGIE
It's a j spec. I'm just wondering if it's safe to have a double decatt with a res ring and boot it?
LOGIE
If the ecu has not been tampered with will it still only run at 0.8 bar safely?
MattP
I run a double whifbitz decat with whifbitz 1bar restrictor ring, full whifbitz cat back exhaust, uprated walbro, iridium colder grade plugs, hks fuel cut defencer, greddy profec spec 2 ebc set at low 1.bar high 1.2bar, and stock smic although I have one of mr whiffins new uprated smics here to fit Mines a 1998 on stock 2jzgte VVTI ceramic turbos Edited December 28, 2013 by MattP (see edit history)
Nic
Cheers guys. So it is safe to boot it with just a res ring in between the decatts? MattP
If the ecu has not been tampered with will it still only run at 0.8 bar safely? Running just a restrictor ring may or may not stop overboost I believe it can differ car to car like a lottery which is why I think the boost controller is required to control and monitor the boost
Rich.2211
Have you got a boost gauge so you know what boost you're making? If you are making 1 bar + you will need a fuel cut defender and a restrictor ring.
LOGIE
All I really wanted was stock power for the time being as ive just done NA-TT it was easier to buy double decatts that to buy catts so that's what I done. I'm not seeking power here I'm just asking if it's safe to run double decatts with a res ring for good measure?
LOGIE
No boost gauge as yet mate. Just wanting to get on the road safely and get used to stock power before going full bpu.

Nic
If the ecu has not been tampered with will it still only run at 0.8 bar safely? No the ECU doesn't control the boost pressure. The stock cats are very restrictive, this restriction in the exhaust helps limit the stock boost to around 0.8bar. Remove the cats and the exhaust become a lot freer flowing, the problem on the j-spec is that the wastegate is too small to then control the boost and the turbos will over boost to 1.5+bar. The restrictor ring basically adds a restriction back into the exhaust to reduce the boost pressure to the desired level, the smaller the hole in the restrictor ring the more restrictive it is and the lower the boost will be. LOGIE
Thanks Nic. So I'd really better fit a fcd before driving then? Or is the res ring sufficient?
Nic
Thanks Nic. So I'd really better fit a fcd before driving then? Or is the res ring sufficient? For now you could just fit a small restrictor ring to limit the boost to less than 1bar and it'll be fine to use the car.

Guest pwings18
mine has restrictor ring for 1b and no fcd for now. only one time on motorway, I had a fuel cut ! it is a "strange" thing the 1st time it occurs !

Did you have to give it the welly to hit fuel cut or does it happen easily with just just a 1 bar res ring?
Scooter
All I would say is that right now, the ecu will save things by fuel cut if you do fit a fcd then make sure you have the other bits in place as an early fitted fcd can cause overboost, melted spark plug tips, melted pistons, blown turbos etc in a worst case scenario! Nic
Did you have to give it the welly to hit fuel cut or does it happen easily with just just a 1 bar res ring? The peak boost pressure will be highest in higher gears when the engine is under more load, so you want a restrictor ring that limits the boost to Edited December 28, 2013 by Nic (see edit history)

jay200bhp
I would contact CW and fit a 1.0 bar restrictor ring between the first and the second cat buddy it should run the 0.9 -1.0 bar fine then
