I seem to remember that a mod some people did was to replace the 16v head on the 5s-fe with a 20V head? Is this correct or is dimentia finally started to take grip? michael Posted August 24, 2005 Share Posted August 24, 2005 I've only really heard of people putting the 4AGE 20V engine into the MK1 as an alternative to the 16V. I think they use a newer Sprinter unit known as a "black top" (I think there is a silver one as well though?). The 5S-FE is a US only model, I presume your chaps are looking at the NA cars available here? If so it's the 3S-FE on some very early 'coupe' models and the 3S-GE for the rest. The 3S-GTE head onto the stronger 2.2L 5S-FE block has been done a fair few times to create a cheap stroker kit - gives some good results and opens the door for turbos upgrades later I'd stay clear of the 5S-FE in NA form personally and either go for a late Beams VVTi 3S-GE or the 3S-GTE.
