FOSTA
Hey guys, I've stripped down my engine and I'm just about to clean and paint the block. But I thought it might be best to hone the bores and clean the top of the block ready for its me head gasket first. I just wanted people's view on what's the best way to do both jobs? For the honing I was going to purchase a tool that you plug into your drill and take it easy Going up and down at steady speed and timing how long I take on each bore. Now for the top of the block ( bottom end ) would I just use a rubbing block with some wet and dry sand paper? Cheers guys

TheTurtleshead
-Bores: Get them measured and glaze busted by someone who knows what they are doing imo! I presume you're not fitting oversize pistons? -Top: Clean with a flat gasket scraper tool… Check for flatness with a straight edge and feeler gauges. Inspect for corrosion/damage. Determine if it needs a deck. Then have it dipped and cleaned thoroughly by a machine shop before any painting/re-assembley.

I take it its not worth doing yourself then. Cheers dude.

No reason why you can't sort the top out yourself. I'd personally always rather have the block honed on a proper rig to make sure it's right. ashbuster
can dipping be done at home? ive been cleaning my head with a brass brush on a dremmel with a can of carb cleaner it does work without damaging/scratching the parts but can dipping be done at home a friend of mine suggested to leave it to soak in a big tub of petrol and it would be quicker but not sure if thats right?
