coza
Hi What's the difference between a 5 speed W58 and R154 ? Running TT BPU no boost control yet so at 0.8 bar So what would be most suitable Cheers
listy
The W58 was standard on the NA supra. The R154 comes from a MKIII 1JZ Turbo Supra. The R154 is a stonger box than the W58, but not as strong as the Getrag 6 speed box. The R154 is also a bit "clunkier" than the W58. The R154 is good for up to small single turbo power (up to circa 600bhp) however the W58, if abused will poo itself at BPU or above. However, I have a W58 at BPU and I don't drive like a granny and it has lasted me so far. But, the R154 is the better choice, if you can get hold of one. Homer
That's a faily wide open question, but in a short summary... - The R154 is by far a superior box when it comes to running higher torque engines, it's far stronger than the w58 - The R154 has a closer but longer gear ratio through the range, making it better for a turbo car Down sides: - You will need some rare parts to make it work (hard to find and/or expensive) - The shifter will sit way too far forward so you'll need to make a custom extension to make it work - Snobbery value for resale - If it's not a 6spd it's not genuine, it'll cost you getting on for 6spd costs to convert but will be worth far less when it comes to a sale. If you want to keep it forever do what you want, if you plan on selling, 6spd is the way to go.
Swampy442
As above but I must add, and as Listy proved, second hand boxes are a lottery, you might get good service out of one, or it could expire at the first hard launch.

skippyboyo1
Also just to add. Your obviously not a homosexual or over 70 years old simply as you have asked a question about a manual. The auto is for the above.
