bignum
The bad smell could be clutch, either way the box will have to come out, dump the oil out of the box and look for shiney bits.
coza
gonna be a job for the mechanic then , when the clutch is in i can still put into gear ? all the gears , so could possibly be the bearings ?
Swampy442
As above, either the box has failed and taken the clutch, or the clutch has failed. What box is it?

LOGIE
Good time to start seeking a R154 if you dont want to shell out for a 6 speed.
LOGIE
R154 is a much better and stronger box IMO
trebor69
Sounds like its the thrust bearing if it goes quiet when clutch is pressed .

JasonR24
Bull poop. That is all. To be fair it does sound like the w58 has crapped itself
listy
It may have done, I don't dispute that. However, my NA-TT BPU on a W58 has been this way for at least 5 years, and hasn't crapped itself. If you drive it like a mans appendage doing hard launches, harsh down shifts and the like, the eventually, yes it will poop itself. However, it is not a recipe for disaster. Treat it right, and it will last, just like mine has.
Guest aspire
Good time to start seeking a R154 if you dont want to shell out for a 6 speed. R154 far superior box, very strong, holds good power.....there is one on here for sale, but a few other bits are needed for the full 100% conversion. Dr_Doom
Definitely sounds like the gearbox is wrecked. Happened to me twice unfortunately with pretty much the same symptoms
Swampy442
Bull poop. That is all. Man has a W58 on a BPU car, might have crapped itself. Im not wrong, sorry dude.

I'm not disputing that it may be the box has crapped itself, just disagreeing with the "recipe for disaster" comment.

Well you must drive like miss daisy or your car is making nowhere near the power you think it is, my bro got through 3 w58`s in just over a year on a 1jz bpu, he`s now using a 154 and single turbo with no real issues and thats for trackdays too. abtin90
If your looking to use your car to its full potential then I'd go with a r154 if your box has failed. I just so happen to have one for sale too

I doubt listy drives like Miss daisy, someone else I know is at BPU on a W58 has been for about a year and he drives it lets say rather hard box is still in one piece, depends on the clutch you are using depends on the condition of the box before it was mounted up to a TT engine How much you selling for ? could sombody comment on if i was looking to get a 6 speed what parts do you need different to what i already have in the 5 speed / thank you Really you'll need the box about 2-2.5k second hand for a good one, prop, and a 6 speed diff (if you haven't got one already) as the 5 speed diff will mean you be at very high rpm even in 6th gear for motorway speeds on a V160/V161 Oh and to the op, if you can put it into gear it sounds to me like the clutch has gone tbh. listy
Well you must drive like miss daisy or your car is making nowhere near the power you think it is, my bro got through 3 w58`s in just over a year on a 1jz bpu, he`s now using a 154 and single turbo with no real issues and thats for trackdays too. I'm only running 1bar at the moment to try and help it last until I source an R154 I don't do silly launches or harsh downshifts and the like. If that means I drive like miss daisy, then I guess I do in your eyes. Those who have met me can however confirm, that I don't Plus, your brother tracks his Supra does he not? Anyone who drives on the road as if they are on a track (to give the same treatment to the box) shouldn't be on the road imo. Therefore, Little Num destroying 3 boxes at BPU and mine lasting, is incomparable really.
