What's happening with my starter ?

Taking it apart and cleaning the contacts and the mechanism may sort it out . . .

But you may find the contacts are badly worn, in which case you'll need a refurb kit like Keron mentioned

If you're not into fixing things, you can replace it with a s/h one . . . . a brand new one (expensive) . . . or a reconditioned one (and give them your old one in p/x)

Ok thanks for the answers.

So, I just have to use these parts ? : http://www.ebay.fr/itm/TOYOTA-SUPRA-MK4-JZA80-3-0-inc-TT-TWIN-TURBO-STARTER-MOTOR-SOLENOID-REPAIR-KIT-/251264620513?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a8089d7e1

No problem with quality or soemthing ? Is Toyota selling a repair kit from therselves ?

Thanks =)

I would have thought that kit on ebay is fine . . .

Looks like the guy gets the parts from Nippon Denso, who make the starter motor, so no point in buying them from Toyota who will add their cut !

Sorry to Hi-jack this thread . . . but I'm about to fit my 2JZ Engine and then obviously attach the Starter Motor.

Am I right in thinking that the mounting bolts normally go from the gearbox side of the Bellhousing, with nuts on the Starter Motor side? (Is there a reason why this is best, as I would have thought it easier to put them the other way round?)

Also I gather there's normally a bracket on one of the bolts . . is this to hold a cable that goes to the gearbox or something?

No helpful replies . . .

But I've just discovered that the Starter Motor I have is actually threaded

So that explains why you put the bolts through from the gearbox side !

1/2" drive 14 mm wobble socket and a l-o-n-g 1/2" drive wobble end extension are your friends
Maybe I'm being dumb (but bearing in mind I haven't got the engine in the car yet) . . .

But I can't see why I won't be able to simply put a spanner or socket straight on the starter motor bolts?

Or does the bellhousing end up tight against the body? (in which case I may have more clearance in the Mk 3)

Yes, the engine bay side "mouth" of the transmission tunnel obstructs access. I get on them from under the car, half inch drive wobble socket on a wobble end extension about 3 feet long, from down at the back end of the gearbox. I use a similar set up with a bigger socket for the top bellhousing to block bolts. Not a difficult job, just a bit fiddly.

Ah I guessed that must be the case . . .

Wonder if I'll have the same problem when I put it in my Mk3?

I'll find out nest Wednesday, as I obviously can't fit the starter until it's in the car and bolted up to the new bellhousing !

By the way, seeing as the the Starter is off the car, I took the plunger out and the contacts were pretty good - just cleaned them up a bit with sandpaper. (It's been painted, so I'm guessing it's a fully reconditioned unit anyway)
