Does this mean heater matrix has had it?

Mine was like this after standing for ages, I flushed and blew it thru with a steam cleaner (risky) and each time it got warmer, in the end I rigged up a bottle into the heater that was raised up to give it some 'head' Oh err mrs!!! and filled that with drain cleaner, left it an hour then ran the hose thru it, you wont believe the crud that came out , then you have to get all the drain cleaner out because it will corrode stuff. Hey presto red hot heater.

Think my cars heaeter matrix needs some tlc. I thought it was on the way out as it gets fairly warm but never hot. Glad to hear that I only need to get it flushed.

he first few times i flushed it out loads of black crap came out.. kept on doing it until it ran clear.. still didnt seem to get much hotter really! might try boiling water and your drain cleaner suggesion though next see what happens with that!

sounds like there might be some trapped air in there. Did you have the heater and blower turned up full after you changed your thermostat etc? I had a similar problem today took ages for the car to "burp" itself. There was actually air bubbles coming out of the heater pipes in the engine bay.

can't remember tbh but I think so..! I think I will have another go at flushing it with some drain cleaner and then have yet another go at bleeding it! it seems so awkward to get all the air out this system..I hope thats what it is and not a fecked pump.. what do people think of the video?

Normally if there is trapped air the heater will get hotter as the revs rise !!!!

I'm going to fill mine via the heater pipes, the top rad hose and the rad itself all of this while the front end is up on my ramps, may even put a 15mm "T" piece in at the top heater pipe with a compression fit "stop" on it as I recall another member doing this to get all the air out of his .....none of which should be necessary but .......

None of which I can do until I get hold of a compressor to blow all the tap water out of the system after flushing

Is that correct? I'd have thought that trapped air in the heater feeds would isolate the water in the heater from the rest of the system, and seeing as the heat is generated in the engine block, it would cause the heater to run cool. I would expect the radiator temperature to run hot if there's an airlock.

Drained my coolant today, connected hose up to heater pipes at the bulkhead and flushed through both ways a couple of times and did get some shite out but it was only when I connected the airline up to it to blow the water out (in readiness for the coolant) did I get a mega amount of crap out so I flushed with water again then blasted with air again etc etc. Put back together with new thermostat and only filled via the rad, left ticking over with heater blowing max and full .....didn't seem to be filling/bleeding up properly, 15 mins later heater still blowing cold so I topped the expansion bottle up and took it for a blast up to 100 or so then all of a sudden......hey presto.....its blowing hot ....YAY :D

Lets hope it stays this way.

It's possibly not got up to temp to open the stat, this can take a long time if its just

ticking over on a cold day, i overcome this by just raising the rpm for a few minutes which

usually does the trick, if its a stock stat the water needs to get to 82 C

When your cars cold check your levels in the rad (it should be full to the cap) and

the expansion tank is to the max line

I tried raising the revs and it ended up raising the coolant and spitting it out, so after dropping them and deciding to take it for a blast I figured it wouldn't harm it by undoing the top hose and topping it up that way first and then sealing the system and taking the car out but as I undid the top hose the coolant rose through that too so I knew it had managed to find its way around the engine ........checked it today after driving to work and back and the rad level was spot on , just needed the bottle topping up ......still have warm air :D

Your systems working correctly then so good news.

Its amazing how much crap came out and with persistence I reckon it would be possible to get lots more out, I see why dude used drain cleaner in his .....obviously the more that comes out then the better circulation and hotter the heater.

A lot of the crap is possibly down to the system being filled with tap

water and over the years the salts & impurities in the tap water build

up. Just like you see the scale in a kettle build up and varies depending

where your water supply is from.

My mothers water supply kills kettles in under a year due to the

scale build up
