Kendo11
Evening all, hope someone can help. This started this evening on the way home. Basically every time I brake (gentle braking in town) all my electrics briefly cut out, my stereo, gauges and all lights. This also happens when I turn the windscreen demister on. It's driving and idling fine, no bulbs are out, and the battery has loads of life left. Any ideas?
SupraP-Z
Check your alternator mate. Whats the voltage floating at on the battery at idle?
SupraP-Z
Actually reading it again...it may not be....could be a bad earth somewhere
Kendo11
Don't have a battery gauge or meter mate. But I've just been out for a fiddle and even using the electric windows is causing it some issues when running. I also just tried the wipers without it running and they were seriously struggling
Ian C
Sounds like an earth or a short? Does it crank and start okay? If you don't have a multimeter you're unlikely to get anywhere with this
Guest Roger NE
Doesn't sound like a short . . . just a bad earth connection. Anything you're turning on (and therefore taking current from the battery) is clearly highlighting the resistance in your earth connection and dropping the voltage seen by the car's electrics. As had been said, you really need a Multimeter to see what's going on . . . but otherwise I'd suggest you undo ALL the earth straps between the engine and the chassis (at both ends) and give them a good clean with emery paper and where they connect. Same goes for the battery connections. That will almost certainly fix it.
Kendo11
Tapatalk decided to lose my reply... So.... Had the battery tested and it's really healthy, giving off a decent output. So I'm thinking it's an earth point. Where are they all located?
Ian C
There's a lot of them, and they aren't all in the engine bay, some important ones are in the driver and passenger footwells. I've got a couple of diagrams showing them I can upload in a bit Added:
