IceMan Posted March 12, 2003 Share Posted March 12, 2003 Now this is a bit annoying... I have noticed a clank/knocking sound from the rear-left corner. My mate thought the tools might be loose but they weren't. He listened out the window but couldn't hear the noise. It doesn't seem to be suspension related as I drive down a pot-hole ridden lane (slowly mind!) every day and the knocking only occurs on some minor ripples and not on the actual holes. It sounds like something loose is knocking against something - like metal on metal and is sometimes quite loud (above the stereo). I thought it could be related to the speaker as my rear-left one is a bit broken and the front of the speaker seems to be loose - if I hit it makes a similar noise to the clanking sound... So, should I just get the rear-left wheel off and have a look or would removing the surround around the speaker be a better bet? For reference I have the Bilstein sports suspension pack and non-standard alloys/wheels (new tyres from January). Anyone else experienced similar? Dragonball Posted March 12, 2003 Share Posted March 12, 2003 May be a silly question but have you an aftermarket exhaust? have you checked the 'sling' on the exhaust to see if it's attached and the weight isn't causing it to bend up and knock? ad500 Posted March 12, 2003 Share Posted March 12, 2003 I guess you could remove the speaker and all of the tools, spare wheel, boards etc and go for a run in the car and see what happens. The last rear noise i had which made a clang over bumps etc, but not all the time, was finally narrowed down to a wrongly fitted bump stop. The stop was mounted up-side down into the metal fixture and due to the bell shape of the fixture and the hard plastic ring on the bump stop it made a "ching" sound over bumps at low speeds. The thing is the bump stop looks like it should fit in with the plastic part of the stop going into the housing where in fact its the cog shaped end that fits snuggly in. Being that you have had after market suspension work done someone may have fitted it up-side down by mistake. If the stop is knackered thay are only £6.50 from Toyota. Matt Harwood Posted March 12, 2003 Share Posted March 12, 2003 I've got some annoyong rattles/knockings at the rear, I've totally stripped out the boot and removed the bumper, removed the top plates over the shocks... Still can't find it. Only seems to do it over small bumps and uneven road surfaces like industrial estates... Where I go every day I'm considering changing the droplinks as my wifes old FTO made a similar noise and that was cured by changing the droplinks. Need4Speed Posted March 14, 2003 Share Posted March 14, 2003 I've just cured a similar problem which was very elusive and I only figured it out after totally sripping the rear interior. Although I could not find this on the workbench, it was a rear shock-absorber problem. I swapped the shock-abobsorbers left to right and the knock swapped sides. I've now replaced both shock-absorbers and the knock has gone. Of course you may have a different problem, but try removing the entire rear interior, seat belts and all and see if the knock is still there. Another relevant point is that without any interior trim and fittings, it's much easier to pinpoint the locaton of a suspension knock. It still isn't consistant (so I reckon it might not be suspension related). Anyway I thought I'd take out the rear-left speaker but I've been defeated... I can't figure out how to remove the large plastic panel around the rear speaker - the other panels were easy by comparison but the panel I want to take out seems stuck. I've undone all the screws I can find. Do I have to remove anything else such as ceiling plastic panel or rear-seat? Or is it a case of yanking the plastic panel and hoping it doesn't break? Just spent £180 x 2 replacing bushes.... actually cause the arms are alloy it's a matter of replacing the arms. big problem I here. Toyota dealer who hadn't seen a Sup for years had stock on these !
