Scott
My guess is that some of you are mistaking the age related micro cracks with what is being shown here. I don't know the actual process that goes on but I know that over time (with sunlight, temperature fluctuations, etc) you will get a haze/micro cracking effect. This generally looks like the following... This is normal and can usually only be seen from certain angles or in certain light. The picture that the op has put up is an accelerated/exaggerated version of what happens as the lights get older. This, in my experience, has been caused by extreme heat or a strong solvent. The ops lights will look like he has pictured regardless of the angle and regardless of the light. I'm just guessing here, but I doubt you guys have had your lights looking anywhere near as extreme unless under similar circumstances to myself, the op and a few others who have mistakenly used a solvent. I can't explain Jamie's lights, for that to happen over night and in such a fashion it's weird to say the least. If it was a solvent, which we know it wasn't, it would be all over the lights and not just the odd crack here and there. With all scenarios the cracks can't be felt and the lights are still water tight. It's just the properties of perspex. For those that don't think it's solvent, go and grab yourself some 98% ethanol and give your lights a clean. Report back with pics
Chris Wilson
I have a MKIV here with the exact same thing after it was valeted. Looks like localized de-laminating of the plastic. If people did as I do this would NEVER happen. What's my secret? My religion forbids me valeting or otherwise cleaning up my cars Seriously though, the customer asked the valeter to see if he could polish the lenses. maybe he got heat into them too fast with an orbital polisher? That's my best guess. Just call it a form of Fresnel lens and baffle people.....
