Spunkmeyer
Not sure when this happened but one day I just noticed these and was like wtf? Man I'm annoyed these were bought new from Toyota by the last owner about (4-5yrs ago) they are plastic. I've just done a headlight sand/ polish job on them using the Meguires headlight kit and a bit of a harsher sand first. About 45mins on each A general improvement on the basic lens but the scratches are still there. Pointless doing more as it wasn't making any headway. You run your finger across and it's proper smooth. So ok must be on the inside but what makes that happen? I've looked trough the forum and it's mostly about haze and yellowing, not seen these scratches before. Also it looks like the lens has two layers right? And the reflection makes it look like the scratches are in the inside of the outer layer. So I don't think the oven approach will help? Don't fancy pulling them apart anyway. Any experiences of this or ideas? Thought is share.
Westcoaster
Looks like petrol has been wiped over them, seen that effect with petrol on Lexan/Perspex.
Spunkmeyer
Yep that's possible. It went to my friendly valeter who wasn't so friendly when I came back and went what the hell you done to my headlights. Of course he denied everything and said they were like that before (which they weren't) I couldn't prove that so said you a f***ing idiot and had to leave it at that. Don't go there anymore of course Cheers for your thoughts

Mk4Gaz
I've seen similar happen with white spirit on perspex I made some custom headlights a few years ago for my mr2, and used lexan for the lenses. I left the film on whilst I sprayed the frames, then scored around the perimeter with a sharp blade, and removed the film. I cleaned them with white spirit, to remove some of the smudged sealant, and they crazed like that straight away.
Scott
As above, it's one of 2 things that's happened. 1. They've used a spirit of some sort. I had this happen with one of my old lenses when I accidentally used an overly strong concentrate of alcohol. 2. They've used a polisher and cooked the headlights. Regardless, you're stuck with the look as there's no way to get it out.
Westy
Good excuse to buy some clear glass lenses IMO

Havard
I reckon they have assumed they are glass and used some solvent based cleaner. Considering a new set of lights are over £500 I would be back down there asking "what the f*ck" are they going to do to fix it. If they refused I would be getting £500 worth of damage done to them or their property. You should also name and shame. People make mistakes, it's how you fix it that keeps your business in good books. H.
JamieP
Same thing happened to me a couple of years back, I did post about it somewhere with pictures, certainly no cleaning products used on mine.

Spunkmeyer
Thanks guys - yep it's a shack of a valeter not a professional outfit, if they pay out they'd go bust. There's no way they will offer up any sort of resolution I can tell just from the types they are. I can go back to make a fuss but that's all. White spirits is a good call. JamieP
Interesting. What do you put it down to then? No idea, just happened over night, dodgy batch maybe? I bought them new in about 2009 I think, found a pic of mine.
Spunkmeyer
Can you separate prefacelift lights (with the oven method) and use the lenses on separated facelift lights?
imi
Cracks on Jamie's lights look different to the other pair. My Spunk - seems like it may be down to some special corrosive solvent.

The OP's look like they have been wiped with some chemical cleaner. I thought that solvent based cleaners just made them go cloudy. H. Dnk
If it's on the inside how can the valeter have done it ?
Scott
If it's on the inside how can the valeter have done it ? It goes right through. It's like micro cracking. I've done it before with alcohol, as has another member. Mine looked exactly like the ops.
Dnk
Strange if it leaves no trace on the outside. UK glass ftw
Scott
Strange if it leaves no trace on the outside. UK glass ftw Yeah it's pretty weird to feel to be honest. You wouldn't know they were there. It's definitely a chemical reaction though.
