simbasupra
Hi guys Ive found my supra has a cylinder with low compression, it goes back up with a little engine oil down the spark plug hole, so im assuming its the piston rings at fault. As the car is on a gravel driveway i think im going to find it a bit tricky to get it out with a crane. Has anyone removed pistons with the engine in place? By this i mean head and sump off. Thanks
Suprash
IIRC, you cant remove the sump without dropping away the front sub frame, havent you got any metal plates you could borrow, engine out is going to be way easier removing head and bottom end outside of the car, doing all that work from underneath and leaning over will be horrible. Dnk
Engine out and full strip is what i'd do. I'd find somewhere else to do it if you can How many miles has it done ? Edited October 11, 2013 by Dnk (see edit history)
Big Supes
Engine out would be easier anyway. Hire a decent strong arm, get some short straps and she'll come out no worries.
simbasupra
Cheers for the comments guys. Will take the engine out then. Was thinking of putting a large thick piece of wood down on the gravel to allow the hoist to move but not sure if that would work?
Dnk
Maybe do able if you get an 8x4 sheet of shuttering plywood for the engine hoist to move on, i'd still rather do it on solid ground
Big Supes
Yeah, as Dnk has said, 8x4 sheet of ply will work. The stong arm will have 3 points of contact with the ground and the legs will be wide apart for stability. Would recommend taking the bonnet off as well, dude.
