millar11
Hey folks. Noise started today when I turned car on? I can hear it more from inside the car, doesn't get louder when I rev car or anything but hear it clearly when idling. Anybody got any ideas what the cause is? Cars a jspec auto TT. Dnk
When your stationary or moving, is the noise coming from the engine bay or somewhere else
LOGIE
bit more info needed...is it whining?? could be a belt slipping. can you locate where IN the car?
millar11
Stationary? Maybe wen moving also but harder to tell. It's hard to describe, the belts are a wee bit squeaky as the car hasn't moved much the last 2-3 months. It sounds like it's coming from the belt area though? Cud it be the water pump? Dnk
Have you opened the bonnet to see if you can pin point the noise ? Does the noise speed up when you raise the rpm ? To eliminate all the pulleys bar the Crank pulley you could drop the aux belt off which drives the a/c, powersteering pump, waterpump, alternator, then run the engine for a short period, if the noise stops its one of those pulleys, if it doesn't stop its something else. Check ps fluid level Also do the tippex test on the CP Edited October 6, 2013 by Dnk (see edit history)
Rich.2211
If it sounds like it's coming from the belt area it could well be the power steering pump whining. Although, I would expect the noise to increase with rpm. Can you remove the aux belt and see if the noise stops? Edit - looks like I was beat to it with the last bit
Gpro
it could just be a belt? try spraying wd40 on on it see if its goes silent
LOGIE
if it been sitting for 2-3 months im going to assume you have checked all the levels oil, water etc. Is your heater working? if so your water pump is probably ok. Id go for a drive keeping an eye on temp guage. Supras don't like sitting about for months they can run a little rough, my supra was at its best when it was my daily driver. I had a humming once and I thought it was my diff...turned out to be federal tyres and a smooth road surface.
millar11
Thanks guys will check that out. Ye the car had a full service recently and was just off the road as it was getting resprayed but will double check all the levels. Are the parts expensive to replace? Depends what you have to replace, Crank Pulley £282 from Whifbitz for a genuine one, water pump from Toyota £100 ish

millar11
Was having a wee look tnyt when I had a spare 5mins and I noticed that the power steering reservoir was vibrating quite a bit? I sat in car and turned the wheels which changed the tone very slightly? So it's a part of the power steering that seems to be the problem? Does this sound right? Power steering has been noisy on all three of my Supras and it's no different on my friends Supra. Not saying it's normal, but definitely common. Have you checked the power steering fluid level? There is a hot and cold level market on the dipstick attached the reservoir cap.
millar11
Really? Well that's a kind of relief in a way but it's annoying me? Is there anyway to fix it? Yeah levels are fine rich.

I'm not saying yours (or even mine) is 100% correct by any means but like I say it seems pretty common to get at least "some" noise from them. There is an article on here somewhere about how to correctly bleed the power steering system, have a search and it should be there somewhere
millar11
Ok thanks rich I shall have a wee search.
Dnk
No noise on either of my supras and the last one had done 137,000 miles inc track days Have you checked the fluid in the power steering ? is it in need of a change or too low. millar11
Yeah the fluid level is fine dunk but think il book it in to get all my fluids changed that haven't been done so far. Looking through the history I got with the car its had the crank shaft pulley, timing belt and alternator belt changed at 55k miles an fits only just hit 61k now.
