Dnk
Chassis left the body today, happy to say the underside of the floor pan and bulkhead are in very good condition and the chassis is also in very good condition, just surface corrosion to deal with Edited September 23, 2014 by Dnk (see edit history)
Dnk
Engine bay and bulkhead cleaning up nicely with only minor surface corrosion to deal with, front axle is built with all new parts bar the main casing and the tailgate with its new skin

Dnk
Both rear quarter windows and old dried out seals were removed, i then unbolted the rear seat belt mechanisms so i could remove the interior corner trims which then gives you access to the nuts that hold the exterior corner trims that are covered in vinyl. This is in readiness for the shell to be painted, driver side was nigh on perfect but the near side has more rot that needs to be removed. Started rubbing down the panels with red scotch brite too
Chris Wilson
You are fast becoming the forum rust expert, I'll give you that! Is the chassis still going to be dipped and galvanised?
Dnk
It's scary where you find it on an old Range Rover, didn't expect to see any in the rear top corners, it's fixed now and has been cut out and a plate welded in, the battery tray also got welded in and more scotch brighting. Had a large bag of 3M stuff arrive, seam sealer and stone chip, supposedly the best you can buy Been all over the chassis and it's solid apart from one small patch which is next to one of the cats. I've been reading up on Galvanizing and it appears to be rather tricky to paint it so i don't know what to do now, maybe acid dip then wax oil the inside and paint the outside Edited October 2, 2014 by Dnk (see edit history)
Chris Wilson
Why would you want to paint a galvanised chassis? The zinc will give perfect *INSIDE* box section protection, which is what you want.r long term durability.
Dnk
I was purely thinking of originality as the chassis is gloss black
Chris Wilson
Looking at the rest of it I think I would put originality behind rust prevention if you intend keeping it long term I am pretty sure there are specific primers to go atop galvanising. How about galvanising *THEN* a powder coat?
Dnk
Its going to get dipped now, thanks for nagging me Chris I've found a flexible rubber paint that is supposed to stick like **** to a blanket so we'll give that a try. Don't really want to powder coat it to be honest but according to the info i've read p/c sticks quite well to zinc. I have bigger issues now as what looked like minor easy fixable corrosion is way worse, along the seam in the engine bay where the front of the scuttle panel joins the bulkhead. The top piece has corroded around the spot welds and has got to be cut out
Chris Wilson
Looks like a bit of a water trap there. Your patience is exemplary, I'd have taken a gas axe to it before now
Dnk
I'm in way to far to chop it up, the budget went out the window ages ago so i just have to bite the bullet and finish it. Maybe in 10 years time i might break even if they continue to rise in value and more of them turn to rust heaps.
Chris Wilson
I am far too much of a gentleman to ask how much *HOWWWWW MUCHHHHH did you say!!!!!????!!! `Tis only money
Dnk
I keep saying its only money and whats a few more £x's i have to spend in the great scheme of things, i think the next stop is a padded cell. Off to the pub very shortly to drown my sorrows with a couple of pints of Tribute
Dnk
Before i hit the pub i popped into the workshop and decided with Phil we had to pull the whole dash out including all the wiring loom, heater box and sound proofing. By 17:30 the dash, heater box & loom was out, i took lots of photos to help us put it back together, now we can repair the bulkhead and the front scuttle panel. I'll pop some photos up tomorrow as i left the camera in the car Edited October 3, 2014 by Dnk (see edit history)
JasonR24
Not a fan of range rovers or 4x4s in general but honestly you've done an amazing job mate. Love the work that's gone into it
Dnk
Thanks Jason, the guys at Twenty Ten are pretty good and by the time we're finished it will be as good is it can be bar fitting a new shell. Chris Wilson
if you get down, or start doing some adding up, take a look at this guy's site. It's not very well organised, but if you dig around the restoration dates you can see that he had serious rust problems, and no doubt the extra X% added on to e bills for it being a Lamborghini. http://www.lambomiura.com/
Dnk
I'm not down just a bit peeved as it didn't look that bad, to be honest it's actually not that bad but to fix it all the dash etc had to come out which we could of done without. I'll have a look through that when i get in later Having got all the dash out i'm glad we did as it's a joke how it's been fitted with wires shoved in any old how, masking tape, bolts not done up etc etc, it will go back in far better than it did on the assembly line. Bulkhead is getting there and another day should see it finished. Took the seriously grubby front carpet home and jet washed it with my new K4 Karcher jetwash, went over budget buying that as well lol
Dnk
Chassis is stripped, i'll be taking it to get it's acid bath then galvanized tomorrow. A few more bits are heading off to the shot blasters, air tank, engine and gearbox mounts and the box where all the air suspension valves etc live The bulkhead is now fixed and free of rot, i've also had an idea on how to stop this happening in the future so the upper bulkhead is going to be modified slightly so it can't fill up with water again. Dnk
Chassis off to the galvanizers, rear axle getting finished and new calipers getting painted
Chris Wilson
Coming along very well now! But you should have bought that recovery truck instead of the RR, it looks a minter What sort of job is re-stuffing the dash going to be? I can just imagine the attempts the workers of the period would have made to short cut (and probably short circuit) the wiring and heater etcetera, that's fortunately, for them, out of sight. Very nice build, please keep posting the photos!
grahamc
making great progress! Shame about the additional rust and budget..... what budget, we dont need no sticking budget!! Fancy doing some work on my spare escort? Looks like you enjoy this sort of thing!
