GetawayDriver
I have a weird noise coming from the the right hand side of the engine bay. When i turn the engine off it contines for 5-10 seconds after the engine has stopped. It not a screech or whine as in the famous death rattle sound clips on MKIV.com. It's more of a spinning vibration, like one of the Turbos has excessive play in the shaft and is vibrating at a certan RPM on spin down. It starts of quiet, reaches a peak which is not very loud, you have to concentrate to hear it and then the pitch climbs as it slows down and the volume drops off. At full boost there is no noise, or maybe i just can't hear it. The car has 105k miles on it, UK Spec, Stock Turbos and Boost... I'm guessing i've discovered the life expectancy of a stock uk Turbo. Anyone got any thoughts? Seen it before? please... some one disagree with me and tell me it's unbalanced radiatior fan!!!
Nathan
Personally I think it's unlikely to be compressor to housing contact if you can't hear it while you are under boost. Still, worth checking anyway. I'd pull the inlet pipes off and check play with your fingers. Not a big job. Sorry, can't be any more helpful without hearing it myself. Regards, Nathan TDI PLC
Guest Martin F
Does it sound like a frog ?

GetawayDriver
not like a frog really..., but then again my experience of frogs is limited. it just sounds like a very tired turbo i think.
Guest Martin F
From that i take it that you have more experience with tired turbo's It's just the problem your describing is one that is similar to a frequent one where the reed valve gets a little lazy and can make a noise when you turn the engine off and air escapes past it. It is repairable but not a big issue AFAIK. I'll try to see if i can dig up the relevant info.
GetawayDriver
please do.. any info would be great help, although i was getting excited about a pair of hybrids!
womble
If it does turn out you've discovered the life expectancy of uk turbos at 105k then it'd seem I was robbed of 6k !!.
Branners
My Uk turbos are at 118,000 and still going strong at 1.2bar (but it has only been 1.2 bar for 2,000 miles) JB
Jez sutherland
My UK spec turbos are going well at 105,000. You never know though! Jeremy
GetawayDriver
Okay, it's not my turbos, thank god, i had a fish arround under the bonnet and the noise seems to be coming from the big black box just after my airfilter in my HKS induction kit. I guess this is an air flow meter or something? and... yes after watching some animal planet last night, it does sound a bit like a frog, but a really big one, made of black plastic and looking expensive. Anyone had this problem before? is it the same reed valve one you mentioned Martin F? Anyone know how to fix it?
Guest Martin F
Well i couldn't find anything that i had saved in my emails at home, but i know i've heard of this problem before and my own car does it on occasion. I've just found this on Supraforums :- http://www.supraforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=637&highlight=Reed I don't know if it is actually anything to worry about. Maybe somebody who is more familiar with the sequential system can shine some light.
